Cmd-key and Dock problem after cold-boot via SCSI |

If I cold-boot my 8600/XLR8 G4 450 via SCSI into 10.2.6/XPostFacto 2.2.5, and use some app (like check mail via Eudora 5.2.1), then a speaker icon flashes on the screen and the Mac's sound is muted. After this the command- key doesn't work properly (I can't select or unselect items in Eudora's lists etc. Also other apps are affected). Also the Dock starts to behave oddly: when I quit apps, their icons retain their triangle as if they were still active until I click them on the Dock. Everything reverts to normal after I log out/in. This all started when I moved my boot partition from a Desktar@Sonnet Tempo ATA100 to an Ultrastar@internal SCSI. It also seems that via cold-boot the Mac starts to boot much quicker into 10.2.6 via the SCSI disk than via the ATA disk or into 9.1 via SCSI. I suspect the intial cold-boot memory test is omitted if I cold-boot into 10.2.6 via SCSI. I have zapped PRAM via cold-boot and I also tried to turn off 10.2.6's User interface sound effects and Volume keys feedback via the Sound panel, but the problem persists. Has anyone else experienced this weird problem? Is there something else I should try to stop this minor annoyance? (I'd rather boot into X via SCSI because I can't cold-boot via Sonnet Tempo ATA100 with the XLR8 upgrade card. Sonnet told me that this is a limitation of the XLR8 card which only supports warm-boot into X via Tempo ATA100). |

Is it possible that your PRAM battery is dying? That can often cause strange behaviour on a cold boot which doesn't occur on a warm restart? |

I'm using the original ADB keyboard which works OK. The error goes away after I log out/in and there is no error via warm-boot. The error occurs only when I cold-boot via SCSI into X. Coming to think of it, I can't cold-boot into X via the ATA card so maybe this really isn't an issue with SCSI. I cloned 10.2.6 from the ATA disk to internal SCSI via Carbon Copy Cloner 2.1.6. The error manifests with a largish speaker icon flashing about 3 seconds on the screen. I guess it is the icon which activates when the volume keys are pressed but does an ADB keyboard even have these keys? Turning off Volume keys feedback didn't help. Then the sound icon in the menu bar is muted and I can unmute it by unchecking the mute check mark in the Sound panel or via the menu bar icon. I suspected corrupted PRAM but zapping it didn't help either. I don't yet have the exact pattern but the error seems to activate after I use the Command-key. It first works OK but then suddenly the speaker icon flashes and I can't do some Command-key -related activities like command-clicking an URL in BBEdit. Also the Dock starts to misbehave. |

what kind of keyboard are you using? I agree with Marty it doesn't sound like a SCSI problem. Is the sound muted in 9.1? I have found that if the sound is up in 9 then it is sometimes there in X depending on the machine. I have to use external speqakers on my 8500 Jim |

Also, did you try a different keyboard? Maybe there is just a stuck key on that one? Strange suggestion I know... Marty |

No that's wacked and doesn't sound like it has anything to do with SCSI? After the system is muted, do you get sound back? Without rebooting? Marty PS How did you move the system onto the SCSI drive? |
