What will ever make my USB/FW work? |

Hi Gurus, I am sure u have seen my previous posts, now here is the details, kinda long, so pls bare with me: It all began when my old Evergreen FW/Usb card started giving me problems printing on my new Epson (my first USB printer). It would stop printing on hi res half way through, saying no more data or something, same message under OS 9.2 and 10.2.6. Then I realized I was having problems capturing video, it would freeze up my system as soon as i started capturing from my DV cam. SO I figured that my Evergreen FW/USB card was done and I needed to change it. So I got this FW card that came with a scanner at my work (its suppose to be for a PC), it worked fine for my capturing. Then I tried all different USB cards, the cheap generic USB 2.0 etc. etc. They worked fine under 10.2.6, but not under 9.2. finally yesterday I got a Macally FW/ USB 2.0 card. Great card even with internal connections and 4pin power connectors. The USB part worked woked fine under 9.2 and 10.2.6 after installing the extensions. Great so far...THEN I tried the FW part......SHUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! same problem capturing crashes. So the Macally card workes fine with USB but not with FW. My conclusion USB/ FW combo cards don't work in my machine, separately they are ok. As much as I hate to I will return the Macally card, keep the no name brand FW card (made for PCs) and decide on the USB card, actually I am thinking about getting a USB 1.1 card since I will probably never use USB 2.0 devices. I still have a no name brand cheap USB 2.0 card that I am temporarily using under 10.2.6, but it doesn't work under 9.2. I saw in this forum about downloading USB 1.5.5f1 from the USB DD, which I did but I have no idea how to install it, I read it but i still didn't get it. Can Anyone help me installing it, cause this may activate this generic USB 2.0 card, then I won't have to get anymore USB cards. Thanks for ur time. My specs: PTP pro w/ Sonnet G4 800 Mhz/ 800 Mb ram My current PCI config: Slot 1: Empty Slot 2:ADaptec 29160 card Slot3: Generic USB 2.0 card Slot4: Generic FW card Slot5: Creative Sounblaster Live Slot 6: ATi Radeon Mac edition Thanks for ur help. Quartz Extreme will not be enabled unless you did the hack to turn it on. There is an application called Quartz Extreme Check (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/ 8969) that you can use to test it. More information on the hack to enable/disable QE can be found in the readme's for PCI Extreme (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/ id/8979). As for bus speed, the Sonnet card does not have any jumpers to set the speed. I'm not sure if it can be done via a software application or not. Hopefully someone with a Sonnet card will step in and let you know if it is possible. You might try to get ahold of Sonnet and ask them if they have a solution also. Let me look into the 1.5.5f1 drivers and I'll see if I can put together some help on how to install the drivers. Hopefully that will be the easiest fix to your problem. |

You don't by chance have Quartz Extreme enabled do you? That is definetly not good if you are capturing video. The only other thing I can think of right now is to maybe look at your bus speed. I was having a ton of trouble on my PM7500 playing DVDs while using my G4/450 card (which uses a 50Mhz bus speed). I changed the card to 420Mhz with a 46.7 Mhz bus and everything fixed up. Most likely this won't help your situation since I think it was the onboard SCSI controller that had the problem with the bus speed, but it might be worth a shot. Good Luck! |
