How do I do a clean install? PDF services gone mad |

Hi folks, I am running 10.2.6 and everything has been working great until today. Now I am having trouble with Preview and Acrobat Reader. Preview will not open ANY PDF's (I end up having to Force Quit Preview) and although Acrobat will open them, they won't print (The Print Center shows progress but nothing prints). I'm not interested in hours of troubleshooting , so I'd like to do a clean install without losing my documents. Is there anything I should beware of? Tom |

The Archive and Install option worked for me. However, the power went out twice during the reinstall so I had to start over and it took hours. Since I checked Archive and Install each time, there were 3 previous system folders. The second two were empty of personal stuff since it was archiving a botched clean install. Anyway, thanks for the guidance, I'm back in business. Tom |

I just returned to my shop with a client's machine a little while ago she started having trouble launching applications. They would begin to start up but would quit just before or just after reaching full launch. with a "....application has unexpectedly quit ......etc.. I first tried running disk first aid Permission Repair no luck then ran Norton and found some major problems including cross linked files ... fixed them but still no joy.... then tried the "Archive & Install preserving settings" no luck so after 3 hrs (including a clean install of 9.2. ) So now I have brought it here to salvage her files and wipe the drive. I could retrieve her network settings but not her Internet "email" settings not a real problem but it is quite unusual for those core Preference apps to fail. I was able to save all but 2 of her emails but those 2 each crashed Mail any time I tried to open them. Not sure what caused all this but it sure was a mess. not sure if it is related to your problem but I would check for the cross linked files I believe that was the problem. Good Luck Jim |

You need to boot back to 9.1 and use XPF to select the CD installer and target drive. Marty |

Wow. Archive and Install sounds really good. Do I need to reboot into OS 9 and run the OS X disk from XPostFacto or can I do it from within X itself? TIA Tom |

Mac OSX 10.2 and higher offer an "Archive and Install preserving User and Network Settings" option or something very similar. This produces a new "System" and a "Previous System" and moves all the User data and Network stuff to the proper place. It works really well, actually I like it better then the old OS clean install, since you don't have to search through the extensions. Good Luck, Marty |

That was a really good suggestion. I hadn't repaired permissions in a long time. Unfortunately it didn't work. I do leave my machine on all the time. - - - So back to my original question in a little more detail: On Mac OS 9 and before, if you did a CLEAN install, when you were done there would be a previous System Folder that you could retreive settings from if something went wrong. Is there anything equivalent in OS X. I've already backed up My Documents, My Pictures, My Music, and all Library items (both from my User and the Main Library). Is there anything else I need? and will copying the Library folders back into the clean install recontaminate anything? Tom |

Before you do that clean Install have you repaired your permissions lately? I have had similar problems in the past and the simple maintenance routines corrected the problem. I have found that X is much more needful of routine maintenance than the previous OS's. Also do you turn your machine off at night or let it run and perform it's nightly cleanup? |
