Installing OS 10.2 on a PowerCenter Pro |

Has anyone been able to install 10.2 on a PowerCenter Pro? I have been trying unsuccessfully for two months now. My PCP has the original 2GB drive along with an IBM 18GB drive both formatted with Apple Drive Setup. I have a Sonnet G4/800, 512MB RAM, a Sonnet Trio card and a Radeon 7000 video card. The CD-ROM is an HP CD-RW that I am able to boot from CD with. My TEAC barely works at all. I have tried all kinds of hardware combinations with no luck. Right now I have both hard drives and the CD-ROM plugged into the motherboard SCSI port because I took the Adaptec UltraSCSI in order to take that variable out of the equation. I tried both XPostFacto 2.2.5 and the Sonnet PCI installer. When I try the Sonnet PCI installer, I get through the installer, but when the machine reboots, it goes right by the 10.2 CD and boots into OS 9. I tried booting from the 18GB drive and installing 10.2 on the 2GB drive, then, when the machine reboots, unplugging the 18GB drive to force the machine to boot from the CD. I get to the happy mac screen, and the machine hangs. Using XPostFacto, I am able to get past the installer. When the machine reboots, I get the grey mac logo, then the machine goes to a verbose screen and outputs a whole bunch of lines. The last line says something like "Waiting for remote debugger," and the machine goes no further. I tried installing 10.2 using both programs and the original 604e processor and didn't have any luck either. If someone has successfully installed 10.2 on a PCP, please post the exact configuration of the machine and exactly how you did it. I would greatly appreciate any help. The Sonnet guys tried to help me out, but I didn't get anywhere. |

People seem to have problems with the PCP and the Radeon 7000 also. There is a long tired thread about the cursor not working right in this combo. I gave up on my PCP and moved all my gear to a powertowerpro which works. Marty |

Yes there are a few of us that have 10.2 running on PowerCenter Pros. There should be a half dozen or so threads on the issue. My suggestion would be to try booting using the onboard video and reinstalling the kernel extensions. Make sure to set the Output Device in XpostFacto. This seems to help. I know the onboard video is not supposed to work, but I am not the only one reporting that it does. I personally had problems when I tried booting using an Apple Rage 128. The machine would lock up whenever I tried to boot into 10 when it was installed. Hence my suggestion to use onboard video. I also personally like to remove any extraneous PCI cards. Although my Adaptec card works fine, I believe when having troubles, that you should eliminate as many variables as possible. I have also found running Disk First Aid and reinstalling the kernel extensions while in OS 9 to be a great problem solver. Disk Warrior seems to be much better than Disk First Aid, but if you don't have it . . . |
