cache control software |

I am running a 9600/233, upgraded with an XLR8 G4 450 (six slot edition) and OS 10.2.6. The machine freezes occasionally, but mostly with particular applications (Photoshop, esp. with iTunes running). The freezes require a hard restart. The problem is not processor related, as I have tested with another processor. Although it sounds like classic RAM trouble, I think not as deinterleaving does not have any affect (other than slowing the machine down marginally). OS 9.2.2 ran with no glitches on this computer. Could the problem be cache control software? I used Ryans cache control to start off with, but I do not think that it disabled the motherboard L2 cache, which cannot be removed. There was a significant speed gain when I moved to the powerlogix software, and disabled the cache. I see that Powerlogix have updated the software, so I will try it, but I was wondering in the meantime if anyone had any suggestions. In particular, can I disable motherboard cache with Ryan's software? Apologies for the long rambling post, scott |

Apparently Powerlogix also has newer release of there cache control software if you are experimenting. Marty |

i'm running os x.2.6 on a G3-updraded 7300/200 (xlr8 300 card). L2CacheConfig worked perfectly for a long time, then xlr8 released their latest L2Cache software, so i replaced Ryan's version with it. had a kernel panic within an hour, then random kernel panics/freezes. went back to L2CacheConfig and all is well again. i will post a note to Gary at Daystar to let him know what I've seen. They're very responsive. |

Hi garforth, Have you try set the Throttle to 4 (range from 4 to 8)? I had initial bootup freeze (slow) on my Sonnet G3 450MHz when the Throttle was set to None. Marcus |

Power cdu director is beta ware and is still very buggy. Power logix Cache Control X is the only software to use if you have either an Apple 9600 or Umax S900/ J700 IMHO. The reason being it is the only software which lets you turn off the motherboard cache.Ryan's L2 cache software works fine and I used it for a long time(it was the only thing available for sometime). However the above machines run much slower with motherboard cache running . Sonnet software I think also auto disables the motherboard cache but can't be used with my XlR8 upgraded Umax. |

I had exactly the opposite experience. I was having all kinds of random crashes with powerlogix cdu director, then I moved back to L2CacheConfig and I havn't had a single hard freeze since then. My crashes occurred pretty much like yours did, when running iTunes in the background and trying to do anything else. -Ben |

...forgot to mention that I'm using the same upgrade card (G4 SSE) in my 9600 as you are. |
