Greetz everybody. This week I finaly tried to install OSX on my 9650/G3-500. After a number of faillures because I was ignoring the readme's I'm now running 10.2.6. It all runs above expectation comparable to my iMac 400DV. The only problem at the moment is the soundoutput volume. With all the volume settings at maximum there is hardly any sound to hear. The startupsound is normal. Has anybody the same experience? |

I've been struggling with no sound forever with my 8500/G4-400/ATA-100/40G HD & now I no more loss of sound since my speakers werebconnected to the iMic plugged into a USB card. |

Another option, if you have USB card, is to get a Griffin Technology iMic, and tell OS X to use it for sound output. Variable volume works perfectly. It also gives you the bonus of line or mic level input, and cleaner sound than your Mac will produce. Ivan. |

http://www.opensource.apple.com/darwinsource/10.2.6/ AppleOnboardAudio has the source for all the Sound ICs. The AWAC Sound IC (AppleOWScreamerAudio) used in Old World Macs is similar to the newer Screamer Sound IC used in the Beige G3 (AppleScreamerAudio). |

Where can I find those sound drivers for the old Macs? NarratorDan |

XPF has nothing to do with the sound problems in OS X. It does not make any sound settings or do anything else related to sound. Apple's OS X driver for the sound controller chip in old Macs doesn't work correctly and Apple probably won't get around to fixing it. But the driver is open source so someone else could fix it. The volume keys work, but they won't change the volume because of the sound driver. |

Thank you for the explanation. I reconnected a pair of active speakers and they work excellent. - Jan |

kilajamo, Yes, everyone has the same, fixed volume level coming out of their internal speaker. The suggestion was made to use a pair of amplified speakers. That cures all woes. The long version: XPF does not enable you to modify the volume level using OS X's Sound controls. It does, however, set a fixed output at what could be called a "line level" volume. Essentially, you won't be able to use those fancy volume keys on the newer Apple keyboards (if you're spoiled like myself with my iBook), but an analog dial on your speakers isn't a bad deal, either. I'm running a 9600/G4-350. Take care! - Dave |
