iMic & 3rd-party PCI USB cards |

I was going to get an iMic and found this in the FAQ section of the GriffinTechnology site... http://www.griffintechnology.com/support/imic/IMIC-005.html ----------- I have a PCI USB card in my older Mac; can I use the iMic? Not as far as we know. Apple says that USB Audio is only supported on machines that have built-in USB ports. A USB card installed in older Macs may support other USB functions, but according to Apple it won't support USB Audio. ----------- Personally, I think Griffin "punted". Has anyone been successful using the iMic on a PowerMac 7300 or similar with a 3rd-party USB card. My USB card works perfectly with everything else I have (Palm, flash card reader, camera, etc...). TIA, Rafael |

I have an iMic connected to my 3rd-party PCI USB 2.0 card. Seems to work fine, except a small amount of "static" during heavy processor or disk load. Occasionally it stops altogether (maybe one or two times, I don't remember) but it's MUCH more usable for sound output than the onboard audio. I haven't used it for sound input. PM 8500 with Sonnet G4/800, all SCSI disks. |

Completed more extensive testing. My configuration is a Sonnet Tango firewire/usb card, Belkin 4-port powered external usb router, PowerMac 7300 wih Sonnet 400 MHz G4 and 704 MB of memory, 2 internal SCSI dirves (18 GB, 36 GB), external 80 firewire drive, external Lacie SCSI CDRW burner, external Lacie 4 GB drive with emergency 10.2.6 OS X and OS 9 9.1 partitions, original Apple internal SCSI CD-ROM drive, and Radeon 7000 Mac Edition. Everything works perfectly (including all firewire/usb external devices) with fairly good performance but the iMic will not work correctly, especially with iTunes and Quicktime. I attach my external speakers to the iMic, turn on, iTunes, start playing a song and iTunes either freezes or quits unxpectedly, EVERY TIME. As soon asI remove the iMic and configure the sound output for the internal system everything works again. I checked the iMic with my flat-panel iMac and it works perfectly -- so it's not a defective iMic. Anyone know what's up? |

I 've got a Griffin POWERWAVE (same manufacturer) plugged into my 8600 w/ McAlly FW/USB card via the 4port hub. Works great and runs ISUB and Apple PRO SPEAKERS as a great bonus. I'm considering the IMIC as a central volume controller separate from the on screen controls of OSX 10.2 |

I must be getting paranoid as I get older :) ... I bought an iMic. I figured I could always use it on my kids' flat-panel iMac if it didn't work on my Sonnet 400 MHz upgraded 7300. Result - It works when using it for input and output until I use Quicktime or iTunes!!! iTunes won't even start playing songs. I haven't had time to do a complete QA analysis to figure out what is repeatable and when exactly things start to blow up but I have a feeling Apple doesn't want us to have an "clean" audio line going out! Like I said maybe I'm getting a little paranoid! Shame, too! I'm able to control the sound volume using all of the controls from the Sound system panel. Something I'm unable to do now... |

The USB2 card (NEC) seems to resolve the audio cutting out issue that I saw with my generic USB 1.1 card (opti). YMMV Marty |

This is odd, I replied to this thread earlier and now my reply is gone... Anyway, I have an iMic that I attempted to use with a 7500 and orange micro usb/ firewire combo card. The sound works, but instead of the onboard audio cutting out, my usb ports cut out.... not very good especially since I use a usb keyboard and mouse. I know there have been other postings on this easily searchable (ha) forum on the matter (mine included). As far as I recall, other people here have had good luck with these. |

My iMic wouldn't work with a 3rd party USB-only card, but it does work fine with a USB-2 card (I bought a cheap USB2 card at a local PC shop; just make sure it has the NEC chipset). I could even import video with the Interview usb adaptor at the same time, although this combo maxes out my CPU (I still have a 604 processor). There is no skipping even when I play MP3's from an IDE drive. However, seemingly randomly the USB audio software locks up and I have to unplug the imic and manually kill a bunch of processes from the terminal. I'm hoping that once I upgrade to a G4 and 10.2, this problem will go away. |

I've posted before on this matter, but since we have no search I'll fill you in on my experience. I've got an iMic... and it does work with my 7500 w/ orange micro usb/firewire card..... just not in any useful way. The sound is good, but when I do something that would normally cut out the on-board audio, my USB ports cut out and won't work until re-boot. This tends to suck since I use a wireless keyboard / mouse connected via usb. So far, I"m the only one who's posted on here with this problem. Several others seem to be using the iMic without issue. |
