Hi all new to forum, I am running a powercenterpro210 with a xlr8 zif card with a newer tech G3/500 running at 530MHz at and useing a ati mac radeon pci video card I have two questions right now I am up to 10.1.5 with out to many problems it really running as stable in X as it ever did in os9.2.2 is there anyway to get the old pcp to show video at startup it will only start showing when it gets to the blue start up screen if I use the onboard video I am able to see startup from start all to full boot into 10.1.5 which is what I would like to see with the pci Radeon for mac would it help to go to a Radeon 7000 from what I have read my old Radeon is as good as the 7000 if not better? What will I gain by upgradeing to 10.2 thatI dont have with 10.1.5? Thanks, Ernie |

This is probably at least the 8th thread I've seen on the Radeon-no video on startup issue. I had the same problem myself and after a couple hours of poring through the older threads, I found the answer on how to fix it. This redundancy is the kind of thing that could be avoided and solved quickly for the people who ask these questions if we had a search function on this board... |

"RE: Seeing video on startup August, 04, 2003 6:39 PM jeff947 . On the Radeon issue that m12954 is having, I had the same problem when my Radeon was in the PCI slot closest to the motherboard (the cards are sideways in a PowerCenterPro). Anyway, the problem is fixed when you put the card in the middle or far away slot. Hopefully, m12954 reads this. Jeff " Thank you, thank you, thank you Mr. Jeff! I can sleep at night now! I can confirm your directions for moving the card away from the motherboard – which is contrary to what I read in the directions (or online) about installing the card – since I always read the directions. Thank you, thank you, thank you – and before I forget it THANK YOU! What a relieve to be able to use Mac OS X 10.2.6 on this "old" Power Center Pro 210 (now 700 of course). Take care and have a great day. Marc |

Along the lines of video I can add the following experienceand question I am having with the following setup: Power Computing Power Center Pro 210, 384Mb, upgraded with Sonnet PCI G4 700MHz, running 9.2.2 (Helper software install), Mac OS X 10.2.6 (XPostFacto install – Sonnet software would not allow install of OS X, any version), Belkin USB/Firewire PCI card and I/O Flex 8 port combo USB/ Firewire front panel, and a CD/DVD-R/RW-ROM Pioneer DVR-105 (LaCie packaged) connected through the Sonnet Tempo ATA 100 PCI host adapter card as a slave device with the master device being a 60Gb Seagate IDE drive, Radeon 7000 Mac Edition graphics card. My problem is when I am using the Rad 7000 card and Mac OS X 10.2.6 (as 9.2.2 works great). The computer boots fine and I get the cursor in the upper left corner of the display – BUT this is where it stays when I attempt to move it with the mouse (actually a Kennsington Turbo Mouse with version 2.3 software). On occassion it will show up in a different spot, but it will not track with the mouse input, I do get a white spot when I press the mouse button and can hold the button down to "follow" the movement to where I need to place the cursor. My question; why is the cursor invisible in 10.2.6 and works fine in 9.2.2? I have emailed Radeon but received an answer wish does not get to the root of the problem, i.e. they refer me to the FAQ's or an address to get a return number to send the card back. Thanks for your comments/suggestions. |

Be sure to set the input device to keyboard in the XPF preferences. This is a known issue - both the input and output devices must be defined. |

You might want to check out my post a few days ago on this very topic. I had the same problem. Even when I selected the output device as the Radeon, it still would startup on the on board video. joevt responded to my post and sent me a patched XPF, an NVRAM saving extension and a Radeon firmware patcher which did the trick. I'll ask him if I can send it to you if you e-mail me at jeff@purplemagma.com. Also, you should be careful about upgrading to 10.2 on the PCP. I have the exact same machine with a Crescendo G4 700MHz in it and my audio doesn't work at all. It can play some sounds but hard freezes whenever I bring up the sound prefs or play most sounds (a few seem to work). Sonnet says its a known problem in 10.2 and they can't do anything about it. I've tried commenting out a bunch of stuff in the driver and but I haven't had any luck so far (it's really hard to debug because you can't print out any logging). Jeff |

It doesnt make any diffrence I have allready set it up to use the radeon for output but it is still dark upto the blue start up screen, it seems that it doesnt make any diffrence that in XPF its set for the radeon to be used for output their is one good thing at least it is only useing the radeon after startup and it doesnt try to run the onboard ati mach64 inless I use two monitors which doesnt work well because the mach64 wont show near the res the radeon will and with both video cards active 2d and 3d is very poor with jist the radeon 2d and 3d works great and yes I am useing ati newest driver for the mac radeon It seems like a minor problem for a computer that wasnt made to run past os7.6 but x is great to see on this old pcp no start up text may jist be something Ill jist have to live with ,XPF is a great program! Go back to OS9, Run XPF, go to the advanced menu and set the output device to radeon(whatever). restart into OSX. Did that work... Marty |
