Hi Can you use a PC modem on a Mac (internet connection only).I am wondering if I could use a usb US Robotics with my PowerMac 7500 equipped with a pci/usb card and upgraded with a G3/400 hhz Sonnet card.Mac OS 9.1 Are there other models or brands that would be compatible with my machine? The reason I am trying to use a PC modem is the exaggerate price tag of original serial modems for older Macs. Thanks for your assistance Laurier |

Just don't try to get any tech support from Diamond/Supra. After being chased from number to number for a half hour or so, I f inally spoke to a fellow in India. He was apologetic, but informed me that the new owners of the company had decided not to support this product line any longer- no support whatsoever, period. I was trying to get a Supra 56K PCI modem to work in my Mac- never succeeded. Duane |

I've found that MOST USB modems work fine on legacy Macs with USB cards. One caveat: stay away from Global Village...I think they sold out before they got the firmware right, and their USB modems are not reliable. My personal preference is the Diamond Supra Express 56k USB....compact, reliable, gets it's power from the USB connection, and shows up automatically in OSX Network System Preferences. Best of all, they are usually $20 or less on eBay, although some of those are old-stock that need a firmware update. Firmware update is quick and easy, but requires a PeeCee since Diamond doesn't make a Mac updater. As I'm sure you know, INTERNAL PCI modems are no-go on Macs. |

Marty Thanks for your reply but it sounds a bit technical to me. How would I know if, for example, I can use a US Robotics USB modem on my 7500? Thanks Laurier |

External modems that are based on "real" modem chipsets which support serial ports (AKA RS232) will work on the Mac with proper cabling/scripts. USR externals just need a good serial cable, and then configuration. Marty |
