Sonnet Tempo VS Acard + Bootable IDE cdrom |

The Ultrastar in my PM7300 just died, and to replace it, ive been looking at IDE drives since they're cheaper. I was just on the phone with OWC Sales, and they said that the Sonnet Tempo is the best IDE card for older power macs with OS X, and that Acard cards have had problems. I was wondering if this is true, and also, can anyone recommend an IDE cdrom drive that is bootable to replace my old 12x SCSI drive. |

So you know, I wasn't able to get my Pioneer drive to burn in OS 9. |

Yeah, I had to make the same decision for my PM73000. I chose the sonnet card. I have the original SCSI 2GB drive & now also a seagate ATA 100 80GB drive. I have an internal SCSI Yamaha 8424CRW drive which is bootable in OSX but not OS 9. I am going to replace it soon with a Pioneer A05 or A06 drive. |

I also have a Toshiba DVD-CDR/RW combo drive in a Firewire case. It used to be installed internally until I got the Pioneer drive from OWC. I swapped the drives after I got the tempo card. |

Careful with the firewire DVD burners, IDVD will not recognise my pioneer AO3 in a firewire enclosure. There are workarounds to force IDVD to see firewire DVD burners, limited to Pioneer AO3, AO4, and AO5, but I just use Toast and other software for my DVD stuff, haven't even played with IDVD. Love the Firewire burner, VERY useful and it just works. |

Thanks. Tempo it is then. I guess I can just keep the factory cdrom, and get an EZQuest firewire burner. |

I have both a Sonnet Tempo ATA/100 and an Acard ATA/100 card. In my experience either card is a good buy but the nod has to go to the Tempo cards. The Promise controller chip on the Sonnet cards will detect your IDE hard drives as ATA devices and optical drives as ATAPI devices. This is important if you were to buy a Pioneer DVD burner because iDVD will recognize the drive and be able burn projects with it. I don't have a recommendation for a bootable CD-R/RW drive for you because I'm assuming you mean you want it to be bootable by holding down the "C" key. However, most drives will be bootable if they are select as the startup drive in the startup disk control panel. |

Not sure about the IDE stuff (all scsi here), but if you want to save some money, why not just get the IDE hard drive, unless you want the cd to be a cd-rw, leave the cd where it is on the scsi chain (just make sure to terminate it if it is the only scsi device), and you KNOW you can boot X on it. Later, you can add the IDE cd rom/writer if you care to. Just trying to help, sounds like you want to save $. Check out some earlier threads here, there is some stuff on these cards, but since you can't just search, you have to go digging. |
