Login screen upon re-boot of Jaguar |

Hello all: I have a 9GB IBM SCSI 80-50 converted drive which I have successfully installed 10.0 and 10.1, and updated to 10.1.5 and all required updates from Apple. This drive is HFS+, which replaced a 4.5GB which was also had 10.0 - 10.1.5 installed on it. I wanted more breathing room was the reason I went to the 9GB drive, now have 6+GB remaining. Now, for the reason I am writing to this forum, when I installed 10.2 on this drive (9GB), after it had "successfully installed the software" and restarts on its own, and ask for the second disk, I quit at that point and "manually" re-boot the computer. (Should I have let it re-boot on its own? If it does.) When it re-boots, I get a login screen that ask for my name and password. (seure login window?) The wierd thing about this is that it is a mixture of languages. I am the only user of this computer. (Autologin) is set. It has the correct name of the computer, but the "name" window has the "navn" under it, and the "password" window has "adgangskode" under it. For the "back" button it says "telbilge", and the "login" button says "logind", and just for the heck of it I selected the "back" button just for grins, and I got another screen that probably is the "login" window that has one word in the middle that says "Andet..." on it I select it, and it gets me to the "secure login" window which ask for name and password. Now the names are from memory, so they may not be spelled correctly. I have done this at least 5-6 times, and I get to the same point. I cannot go any further. When I put in my name and password, I get the spinning disk and got nowhere. It gets to a point where the login window shakes "no" and ask you to fill in the blanks again. I have had to re-install everything (10.0, 10.1, 10.1.5 and apps) each time. For now, I'll stay with 10.1.5 until I get some answers. Any ideas? Specs for my computer: PPC 9500 with a G3/250, 768MB ram, 2GB SCSI (OS 9.1)ID 0, 9.1GB 80-50 converted SCSI (OS 10.1.5)ID 1, ATI rage 128 w/16MB video ram (replaced a mach 64), Macally Firewire/USB combo card. I went as far as installing 10.2 as a fresh install, but I got to the gray Apple screen, and got 2 sets of a series of white vertical lines thru the Apple logo. I updated the drivers for the ATI video card to work with 10.2 after all of this. I have not tried to install 10.2 since. I'm afraid that I will get to the same results again. Any and all answers will be appreciated. Thanks, Tom |

Thanks for clarifiying on the language, at least I was close :-)...... If this machine is going as far as an instal, then I agree that a clean install of 10.2 would probally do the trick since there doesn't appear to be any hardware issues. I can't remember exactly what the second jag disk installed, but I thought I saw a bunch of language localisations going in, but that was a while ago, so that might have been from the main disk. Regardless, I used De-Localiser to free up about 500 megs of stuff I didn't need as my Dannish and Finnish skills are lacking, an Korean is not even an option! I do speak German, but not on my mac.... ;-) |

Hello! Language is i think Danish, not Finnish . I´m from Finland :) Cd2 contains additional programs Acrobat Reader , printers ,etc. You don´t need Cd2 if you uncheck those extra programs in first installation under customize button. Can you do fresh install of 10.2 without 10.1, could be better. Take out all extra pci cards that sometimes helps, only Ati in. Some of my machines installs only with Twin turbo video card. If you have text on the screen, describe it here so our Gurus can help ;) |

Thanks for the information. I did use the second disc, and I ended up with the same login window the last time I installed 10.2. That is why I tried to use just disc 1. I read on this forum that you do not need the second disc. I thought that maybe the second disc was causing the problem. I do not use the "login" when I am on 10.1.5. Why am I even at this "login" window to begin with in 10.2? I checked 10.1.5 to make sure that the "autologin" box was checked and it was. So I'm stumped. I do not want to be in the same situation if I try again later. Ryan, if you read this, do you have any answers? Thanks, Tom |

Sounds like the default language is Dannish or Finnish....when it reboots. You should have the two disks for your jag install and you should put the second one in, and let it do its thing. I believe that second disk sets up all the language localizations, which when finally installed can be removed with a nifty little utility called De-Localiser which removes any of the extraneous languages. |
