I have got serveral SCSI 50 pin for my 8500/g4 sonnet 800. Most of the disks I put on the scsi chain are not recongnized, getting a "cannot initialize unsupported drive" or simply not showing up at all. The funny this is that X will soemtimes recognize them. These disks come from old PC servers. Is ther any way to initialize an unsupported drive? |

The biggest problem is timing out 80 pin drives, especially if you have three or more on the same bus, with 68 pins. Termination is simple but I have seen where some drives(50, 68, AND 80) that don't like being ID 1(or whatever), (no mount, nothing)but switching them to ID 2(or whatever) makes them work. Depending on your config, try changing the ID #. That effects the start command timing, Make sure you have the drive jumper for "disable unit attention" set. My biggest beef with the 80 pin drives is the adapter, yeah I can use them, but I much prefer drives with 68/50 pins, especiallly since I like to RAID some of the machines I work on, so it really helps to have the timing down at that point. |

Well It's really weird. I have a ST3240 from an old mac, no problem, and another , same part number, but from a PC server, "unsupported". It get even better. Another 4GB seagate will not even show up under 9.1, but I can see it under X and initialize it, including the "install 9 dirvers), but stillnot seen undex 9. All my drives are 50 pins. |

Sometimes after you initialize them with Speed Tools or some other utility you can then re-initialize them with 9.1 Utility. FWB would not be a utility of choice unless you can make the switch to OS 9.1 there have been several problems reported with it not playing well with X. The spin up problem with 80 pin drives is usually a jumper setting. I have used many 80 and 68 pin drives with no problem. currently using 2- 80 pin (9 gig) and 2 full hight 68 pin (43 gig) no major problems. usually just have to make sure adapters are properly seated and not under any stress that might make them unseat. I have seen several reports of X having problems with SCSI especially termination but have not experienced any. |

Speed Tools works well. FWB also works, but reported problems on X here for old world. If you can initialise them in OS9 nativly, that is the best. Good news is that they are 50 pin. I have had issues with 80pin drives and converters, I do have one 80 pin on my 9500 happily running in Jag, so it is possible, but I got some head-aches making that drive spinup initially (all are running the native apple dirvers). The ones not showing up, can you see them in 9?? If so it is a timing issue on the scsi chain and you need to start messing with jumbers, termination, etc. X is touchy on scsi, 9 more forgiving. |
