Crescendo warning message |

Hi, After reading through many of the threads, I'd have to say my OSX install was relatively successful. The only hitch is that when Classic starts up (I have it set to start as soon as OSX finishes booting up) I get a small dialog box that says: "This Macintosh does not meet the requirements for Crescendo to run". I'm running a PowerMac 9500 with a Sonnet Crescendo 300/1MB cache upgrade card; ATI Rage Nexus 32MB video card; ATI Mach64 4MB video card; Keyspan USB card; 512MB of RAM. OS 10.2.3 with 9.1.1 on a separate HD for the Classic mode. XPostFacto 2.2.5 and L2CacheConfig were both installed. Extensions Manager in Classic indicates that the Crescendo 1.4.7 extension is active. It's possible that this message didn't appear until after I installed L2CacheConfig, but I'm not sure. Has anyone else experienced this? Is L2CacheConfig all that necessary if that turns out to be the culprit? Thanks for your help. Paul Kapteyn |

Somewhere in the forum there is a better answer, but here is my stab. OS X has difficulty recognizing processor upgrades. It simply cannot see the backside cache on your processor. Sonnet's OS X tune-up makes patches to allow Profiler to see the processor and its cache correctly. L2CacheConfig doesn't make these patches. You could also remove L2CacheConfig and see if there is a slowdown in system responsiveness, if so you will know the cache was enabled. As to the warning you recieved, it is when the Sonnet extension in the Classic enviornment tries to access the processor. As you may know, OS X does not allow anything in Classic to access the hardware. The error is simply due to the extension not being able to access the processor. You should use the Classic System Preferences panel to set the Sonnet extension to not load when Classic starts up. Now that I think about it, L2CacheConfig may not be disabling the onboard cache. Sonnet and Powerlogix, even XLR8's OS X software does this. I would try one of them if you are concerned. |

The confusing part of this is that the 9500 has its L2 cache soldered onto the motherboard, therefore cannot be removed. The Sonnet Crescendo software is supposed to disable it so the backside cache on the upgrade card can be used instead. But if I disable the Crescendo extension, the Apple System profiler in both OSX and Classic modes show only the 512K motherboard cache, not the processor's 1MB backside cache. SO, I need to find a software fix to disable the motherboard cache and enable the backside cache. It doesn't seem like L2CacheConfig is doing it. Any thoughts? Anyone? Thanks Paul |

Last week I upgraded my 9650 with a Sonnet 800mhz G4. Because I was running 10.2.6 for some time now with the previous 500mhz G3 in witch I tryed several L2 cache enhancers I decided to do a clean install of X. After installing 10.2 and running the update to 10.2.6 I only used the Sonnet X tune- up. System Profile now shows that I have an 800mhz G4 with 256K L2 and 1MB L3 cache. Also the ATI Radeon 7000 mac edition videoboard is running like it should. It seems that there is no extra install needed with 10.2.6 to run both CPU and video. Only problem... the OrangeMicro USB2.0/FireWire pci board freezes the computer when using a webcam program. It did not with the G3 but when reading the FAQ's on the Orange website I found that it has a problem with pre G3 Mac's. Reading several other postings here says it's not the only one causing problems. |

Remove the sonnet extension from the system folder that you are using for the classic environment. Remember that your sonnet cache is already enabled with L2CacheConfig and it would make no sense to try enable it "again" when starting classic. |
