What version of OSX did you install first? |

I am thinking that I am having so much trouble installing OSX on my system (PowerCenter G3 upgrade) because I am starting with OS10.0 CD. What do others start with? It seems like it should be better to start with OS10.1 or later, full install. I tried installing 10.2 and got pretty far until it stated that I needed OSX on my hard drive already. It is an "upgrade" CD. However, I was very encouraged to see the installer working as well as it did. Does this make sense? TIA |

Install without the Radeon 7000, do all the updates, then put the Radeon 7000 in. |

Another update to my saga. I successfully upgraded my 10.1.5, which was running well, to 10.2. Shortly after I was using it I started to get freezes, the pointer would not move and I could access nothing. I restarted but then 10.2 would not boot successfully. I decided to swap out my G4/700processor upgrade and put back my G3/500, both Sonnet. The G3/500 seems to have made the difference. 10.2 worked fine and I upgraded to 10.2.6 successfully. So far today all things working well. However, one odd note. I thought that I would put a copy of 10.1.5 on to another partition to have, just in case I need it, but I now can't get my 10.1 install disk to boot up? The only difference from before is I replaced the ATI Xclaim card with my Radeon 7000, which is in the machine now. Could that make the difference? I will try it tomorrow. Any thoughts? I really like OSX2.6. Hopefully I can keep it working. I guess I should start a G4 tower savings account, maybe even a G5 down the road. Anyone doing anything with iMovie or FCP on these old machines? How's that going? |

10.2.6 runs very well on my PowerTower Pro, with G3/450 (Metabox). Powercenter is a different animal though... Usually error 1 is a bad CD Rom or CD rom drive IME... If you try with 10.2, and it also has problems on the PC try swapping out the CD Rom drive... Marty |

I have 10.1.5 working well on my PowerCenter G4700. Will it work to upgrade to 10.2x? It seems that many people have been having trouble with 10.2.6. |

Just to followup...Success! I appreciate all the useful thoughts on the forum. What finally worked for me and my PowerCenter G3/500 was to install on another of my machines that had a Sonnet Ultra100 ATA card attached to two 60GB drives and running an ATI Xclaim VR 128 video board (16MB). I'm not sure what specific combination or item made the difference but my 10.1 install disk went right at it, non-stop (at least 1 and a half hours). Got much more responsive after installing L2Cacheconfig. Now running 10.1.5 and will play with it for awhile. Updating some of the other software meanwhile. Is 10.2 (10.2.6?) worth it on a PowerCenter? What about OS9Helper to upgrade 9.1 to 9.2 for the Classic system? Do things work better with 9.2? I noticed that L2Cacheconfig does not like 9.2. By the way, it seems that the little item to change on the upgrade CD to make it an install CD can only be done in OSX? I also read somewhere that Apple put the stop to this being doable. Thanks again all! By the way the drives on my other machine that I had so much frustration with are SCSI 80-50 adapted. |

It seems that no matter what I do I end up at the same place during install..."installer unexpectedly quit. (error 1). Press return to restart." Even using the new 10.1 install CD I got from OWC. Could it be a conflict with CD/DVD Speedtools which is known not to be compatible with X? I am using a Yamaha 8424 burner/CD but my system won't recognize it in 9 without Speedtools. Would one of the "12x Apple Compatible CD drives from OWC make the difference? And then how does this explain that I get started in the installer from 10.2, go the first few steps, can even use the disk utility but then it refuses to go further without a 10.x system on my destination hard drive? |

I started with 10.0 on my powercenter 210 upgraded to a g3 running at 531 mhz the way I had to do it was to un plug everything but what it had to have to boot 9.1 and use an old 600i sony apple branded cd rom drive from an old powermac 7200 to get it to load I dont really know why but out of all my cd rom drives I had none would work except the 600i all my drives were apple branded drives 6x,8x,10x,24x but it took the old 600i to get me up to 10.1.5 after the powercenter is loaded I can use any of my drives and they work fine I even use a sony cdrw and it works great mine has a radeon mac addition video card and 416 megs of ram lots of ram is a must running x jist keep pluging you will get the powercenter to load. |

You know, I have the 1.0.4, 10.1, and 10.2 full install disks. I truly beleve that it is better to install from the highest full install - use the least amount of fooling around possible. I know that my original install at 10.0 was bumped up to 10.2 over a period of time, and, although it was nice to see the overall improvement in performance, the flakiness was more evident. When my HD died and I had to start over, I started right at Jaguar and have had minimal problems. I have never been convinced that upgrade installs fully clear out accumulated and outdated junk picked up along the way - as long as you have a good idea of the "extras" that are third party you need to reinstall... BTW - thanks to Apple for designing an OS that mostly eliminates the above problem. How many times do you remember dragging over extensions in 7, 8, and 9? I also seem to remember a way to turn an upgrade disk into a full install with a small change; as I recall, it was stated that the disks are almost identical. I even think that I saw it in this forum some time ago. Ah, to be able to search... sorry... |

I got your email but can not access it from here as the server copy was deleted when Mail.app pulled it into my inbox. I just sent a zipped up copy of the website to my ISP account which I can forward to you if send me your email address again. I can access this account through pine. Sorry for the delay. |

On another note, why wouldn't (shouldn't) the OS10.0 original install CD work? Is it more picky than later versions? I just double checked and my 10.1 and 10.2 disks are both upgrade disks, so marked. marcush, I would be interested in checking out that website. I sent you an email. |

I'll have to go back and check but I don't remember checking archive install. On the other hand I was so surprised to see the 10.2 installer seeming to work I just sat there in amazement, as I had little to no success with 10.0 and 10.1 other than apple logo screen and I guess what people call a kernal panic. Still trying to figure out what that is. In fact, I have not been able to get a working OSX on my machine yet. Only goes part way and then reboots. The 10.2 installer just said that it did not detect an OSX on my hard drive and therefore could not complete the install. |

I started with 10.1. However, It was an upgrade CD. There is a procedure posted all over the web on how to convert a 10.1 upgrade CD to a Full Install CD. I heard that it was possible to do the same with the 10.2 Upgrade CD. If you email me I can send you the entire contents of the website I found that had the instructions. I don't know if it is still up but you can try this and let everyone know if it still works. It was pretty easy to do. |

i never heard of an upgrade 10.2 CD, are you sure you did not have archive install selected? that could mess it up because it would be looking for a system on your machine. I used 10.0.4 then upgraded to 10.1 then did a full install of 10.2. |
