Panther w/ both XPF's |

OK, so just for fun I tried to install Panther on my 7300. I tried with XPF 2.2.5 and XPF 3, using build 7B59, and got exactly the same results. I reboot, get the grey screen (ok, heart beats) and then get the text scroll (MUCH faster it flies by). The last thing before the "we are hanging here" is a reference to Darwin kernel v7. I am not the most versed (or really, too much) in the real nuts and bolts of this, but I am just adventurous (or stupid) enough to try. My trusty 7300 has always defied the odds and done what was not expected, until now. I suppose what I am saying is - I am up for "guinea pig" suggestions - as long as it helps others to get where they are going. |

Chibi, are you using an IDE DVD drive on a Sonnet Trio? I tried that and an SIIG card in an 8600 with a 500 MHz G3 and the SIIG card performed much better for DVD playback. Sonnet says the IDE is slower on the Trio because the Trio has a PCI bridge. I don't think that makes sense since DVD bandwidth is not that high. Maybe they have crappy drivers? Also, have you ever wondered why they have two differnt firmware installers for the card? It's like they couldn't fit all the features into one firmware (maybe they picked a rom chip that is too small) so they make two versions with different compromises. The FirmTek firmware has some kind of compression so you can't compare the differences without doing some Open Firmware work. I hope Panther will be better for the Trio card. |

powerderhaus, What I meant is that I can boot the Panther Install CD itself, and run the installer through its full course (minus CD 2 and 3 obviously as those are needed upon reboot just like cd 2 for shag). I cannot, however, boot the OS that gets installed. It immediately KPs, no matter what. So XPF 2.2.5, when acting as a "helper", must be forcing the use of the darwin 6 kernel, because when I try rebooting into the installed Panther OS, KP city. Paaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaanther! I mostly just want Panther to try the new DVD player app. I'm hoping it isn't sucktacular like shag's is. Damned slow DVD in 10.2. - Chibi Delennâ„¢ |

Chibi, the reasons are a little complex--in fact, it's fair to say I'm stumped at the moment, but I do still have a few theories to try out. Unfortunately, I really can't go into much detail--I wish I could. |

i don't think that ryan has released any version XPF that was intended to boot panther... He stated in his log that he was able to get the the panther install screen, and that was after 3.0a3 was released, so if you can boot panther, that would be very strange... unless i am somehow misunerstanding what you are saying. |

My question is this: why can XPF 2.2.5 boot the Panther Install CD, let me install just fine, then upon reboot nothing works? XPF3 can't even do that, but 2.2.5 does. So what gives? - Chibi Delennâ„¢ |

Unfortunately, I can't say that much about Panther because of NDA issues. Suffice it to say that I've made some progress, but it's not working yet. I don't believe that there is anything that can make it work other than changes to some of the kernel extensions that XPF installs. (That is, I'm pretty sure there isn't anything you can do to make it work other than writing code :-) |
