PPC 604 Mach 5 on a PM7300? |

I have a PM 7300 with original processor PPC 604e @200MHz running OS X 10.1.5. And I have a PM9600 with a Sonnet G3, and the original 9600's processor (a PPC 604e @300MHz, Mach 5) lying inside a drawer. I was wondering, since the Sonnet upgrade fits in both 9600 and 7300, will the 9600's processor fit in the 7300? I'm not thinking about spending any $ in a processor upgrade for the 7300 righ now, and the 300MHz PPC is already here anyway... a little speed boost would be welcome. Any thoughts? |

Hmmmmm.... You mean, the 7300 will provide higher voltages than the Mach 5 supports? In this case, the Mach 5 would be fried. Or it just doesn't provide all the power needed for the Mach5? Antway, thanks for the tip. This will prevent me to make a BIG mistake... ;-) |

It's a NO, NO. While the slots a the same mechanicly, otherwise they're not. There are, as an example, different supply voltages at some contacts. For quite some time all processor upgrade cards were incompatible with the Mach 5 Macs for this reason. The CarrierZIF card by XLR8 were the first to be compatible with all 7300..9600, now Sonnets G4/700(800) are, as well. Don't try an Apple Mach 5 card in any non-Mach 5 Mac. Could give a "Big Bang" ;-) The archives at "xlr8YourMac.com" have more info on this. Mike |
