I had given up on 3.0a3 and desided to try this one, So far i have been able to boot 10.2 fine but i can't install anything with the installer, Disc copy, or stufit. when i try to update my system to 10.2.6 (or use any updates that i had downloaded) the installer does nothing, the only thing that happens is teh menu bar changes to installer. Disc Copy, says Disc Copy helper unexpectedly quit. and Stuffit says something about its engin missing and to reinstall it. Right now i am downloading the 10.2.6 update and am going to try to have software update install it. Also the prefs for the dock don't save, every icon is a folder until you click on them, then whenyou restart the dock is reset. I have a feeling that these are more curuptions fromt eh FWHD, but i get no IOFW fetch write errors at all... In the console i get this from the installer: 2003-09-23 17:56:59.991 Installer[406] *** +[IFGlobals isRunningOSInstall]: selector not recognized Disc copy is a huge error. here is stuffits error:dyld: /Volumes/untitled/Applications/Utilities/StuffIt Expander.app/Contents/MacOS/StuffIt Expander truncated or malformed library: /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/ CarbonCore.framework/Versions/A/CarbonCore (load command 0 fileoff plus filesize extends past end of the library) looks like carbon apps will be messed up for me. |

That card was worse than the belkin card. with the belkin card i could get to the desktop, but with no mouse. With the sonnet card i could get to the boot screen in 10.2.6 with no mouse but 10.2.8 would not do anything (no system found) with the sonnet. I tried telling XPF to reinstall from the CD, but that did not work, i also reformated the helper drive but that did nothing. oh well, i will send the sonnet card back, but i don't know what to get with it, i really don't need anything for my computer that is $80 so if someone wants the card, or wants to save me the restocking fee let me know, tomorrow or the next day i need to get the return number and send it. |

After i upgraded to 10.2.8 i get some failures but no more IOFW errors. Most of the time i cannot log in, but i was just able to, but again i have not mouse and no way to control the computer. and i also lost all custom icons again. But to me it looks like there was someting wrong wiht the FW drivers for 10.2.6 because that is the only Version out of the 3 (10.2, 10.2.6, 10.2.8) that will give me the IOFW errors. I still think it is odd that is is having trouble reading the FW drive. I will put the Sonnet back in tomorrow, i have it a few more days, so i want to test it as much as pssible, and see if i can get rid of some of those errors. But i don't know if i want to keep it, it seems like the problem could be solved through software, and $80 is a lot for a FW card, particularly when you already have one... we'll see. |

When you use XPF to reboot from a FireWire drive, XPF always checks to make sure that the system files are synchronized with the helper. Your other problems sound like you are getting bitten by the general problem with reliability of FireWire drives when booting from them in some configurations. I am going to be working on a more robust way of keeping the FireWire drive and the helper drive "in sync" when doing upgrades--I am hoping that this will solve some of the reliability problems. But there will probably still be some problematic configurations. |

also, if i just upgrade to 10.2.8 (on my FW drive) from my SCSI one, will i be able to have XPF find the changes in the system? |

the software update nstall did work but the problem is now that i am getting those damn IOFW errors, not to many but theyare there. So i think that those errors can be changed by software, because thats all i changed. Also when i do start up, i cannot move the mouse, my internet connection is gone (it does not start during the boot) and all the hard drive icans (and dock icons) are folders. I a running a Discwarior on the drive now, then i may see what happens if I copy some of the files over from my 10.2.8 drive (to 10.2.6), just for kicks, Can't get any less usefull... |
