I just completed an upgrade to an 8500 Powermac with a Sonnet G4700 processoe upgrade card, ATI Radeon 7000 graphics and a Tempo ATA Card. The sound stopped working although the start-up chime still works. Any suggestion? |

It is the oval shaped on that sits on top of your monitor, was stock with the 8500....mot sure if it works on beige g3, will test, I have one with AV module and 10.2.6 tempest- perhaps it is a combo of both mic and module?????? |

Are you talking about the Apple Plaintalk microphone? I have two of them from other machines that I still have (Beige G3, Power Center Pro). They won't work in my Power Tower Pro but maybe with the Beige G3. |

They actually work in OS9, just not OSX. |

The mic is called an AV microphone so perhaps the AV module has some interaction. |

You want to hear something even more odd. I originally had an 8500, got jag in it AND had sound in from the legacy MIC that I had. When I upgraded my machine to a 9500, needed the space for HD cooling ;-), I just moved all the parts, HDs, cards, etc over to that machine, figuring I would have to re-install etc. Jag came right up, and I was looking at my old desktop. Everything was just as it was on the 8500, apps worked, had sound out, etc. The only thing missing was sound input, the only thing different in my config was the MOBO. The logic boards on the two machines are from the same era, so what is the difference, except for more PCI slots, and space for more cooling fans......... I like your theory about the legacy mic, but I have one, and while it did work on the 8500, now it doesn't on the 9500...... Perhaps the media video module circutry has something to do with it, the 8500 has one, the 9500 does not............ |

I'm perplexed as to why sound input works for me but not for what seems to be many others. I think it's due to the type of microphone you're using. When I purchased my 8500 new, it came with a mic. It has a longer plug than others. Apparently, it is powered and has 4 contacts rather than 3. It is labeled part 590-0670 on the underside of the plug. http://www.jayceland.com/AppleParts for more info. When I plug in my Microsoft microphone, which has a smaller, "normal" plug, sound input doesn't work. |

Sound output is fine on my Power Tower Pro with Sonnet G4 800. I also have a Sonnet Tempo ATA/100 with a WD 80GB SE, 120GB IBM, and 20GB Quantum AS Plus drives attached. No sound problems to report except sound input. That has never worked. I got a M-Audio Revolution card to get around that issue. Sounds great. |

I'm seeing the same thing. Just upgraded to a Sonnet G4-700 on my 8500 (no ATA drives) , 10.2.6, Try playing movies or iTunes and the sound starts to break up and then quits altogether. OK after a re-boot. Sound was fine on the same system witha Sonnet G3-400. Looks like Sonnet needs to tweak their 'tune-up' package. |

Running an all SCSI - 8500G3/500 - 10.2.6 just a generic USB 2 card and a generic firewire card both work with no problem. Adding ATA/IDE is the culprit in many no/ bad sound situations. I use external speakers with excellent results. |

You have to be EXTREMELY picky about which USB card you use if you expect to USB audio situation to help any... I think the revolution PCI card is also an option for mac with more slots :~( Make sure the audio out jack is also not producing sound... Since if it is, plugging in some speaks might be a cheap fix. Marty PS this issue never occurs on my 8500 running 10.1.5 |

Sound output failure seems to be a common problem on systems with an ATA disk controller. Nobody seems to have isolated the actual problem but the best workround seems to be to add a USB audio I/O device like a Griffin iMic (about $35). |
