can't install osx: Fatal Error Message |

I recently attempted to install os x on a powermac 8500. Everything started out just fine but while copying files installation stopped. The message read that a "fatal error" had occured. Restarting the computer with the os x cd shows a dos-like command screen that eventually boots into the os x installer, at the "choose text language" screen. Unfortunately at this point I have no control over the mouse or keyboard and cannot continue......I am now attempting to re-install os 9 from cd. Any suggestions for a second attempt at os x install?? |

Do you have any other SCSI drives lying around big enough to put 9 on? I am runnning an 8500 G3/500 256 meg Ram 10.2.6. I am currently using both USB and Firewire on PCI cards. 2 Gig is a bit small to install Jag on with anything else, also I seem to remember something about OSX having to be on the first partition (tho that may be for IDE only). To be on the safe side remove all PCI cards and use the original hardware (ie KB & Mouse). Also what bus is your SCSI pluged into. I have always used the fast bus but some have had better results using the slow SCSI bus. Like the other posts said be sure to format the drive properly. During the install I would be sure to Custom install and leave out all the different languages they take a lot of space. Also how much RAM do you have installed.... the more the better I had 384 but gave up 128 to a friend in need will replace later, I can really tell the difference. I have heard that 512+ is best one last thing make sure your install CD is clean ... no fingerprints.. Good luck |

Jag will install fine on a 2GB drive if you have 1.7GB or so free. In the Installer chose to Install only BSD SubSystem and the other things that it will NOT let you uncheck. Just like a Costum install of OS 7-9 |

To do this you need to have a seperate partition with nothing on it. You are trying to upgrade your 2 gig drive, and the installer is not finding enought room open on that disk. If you can get the external drive to boot 9.2, then reformat that 2 gig drive so it has NOTHING on it. I would DEFINATELY try to get at least a 4 gig drive for X. Read Ryan's notes on installing XPost Facto and Jag, they are extensive and can answer a lot of questions. Good Luck!! |

When I tried the install I was running 9.2.2 already. I will try it again after removing the PCI card. What is the necessary hd memory to run os x. Is it possible that i don't have enough room for os x |

REMOVE, the USB/FW card and try that. If it still won't install format the 2GB Drive with the DriveSetup from 9.2.2 not (9.0 or 9.1). If you still have same trouble you need a powered termanator on that SCSI bus at the last id, or move the HD to the ext. SCSI bus. Considder a LOW LEVEL Format on that 2GB as well. Or Hard Disk Speed Tools. |

the video is on-board. I have recently installed a usb2/firewire combo pci card that was working wonderfully with os 9. Thus I have my keyboard/mouse connected via usb. I also tried to connect my old keyboard/mouse via pin connect to the original hardware... didn't do a thing. As to you're first two questions, I am not sure how to respond. The language screen is the same resolution as the old os, which I believe is 1240x 780, or something similar. I do not have os 9 on a separate partition because the hard drive itself is a whopping 2gb. I do have a 10gb external HD via firewire but this drive "is not bootable," which is another dilemma to which I need assistance. I have my os 9 files backed up on the external HD. |

Also, re-installing 9??? Why do you have to do that?? That should be on seperate partition. |
