thanks for the help yesterday. I was able to successfully install os x last night, and am looking forward to setting up my system tonight. I have a couple questions. First, I have a FW/usb combo pci card installed that was working fine in os 9.2. With os x, the FW hard drive is recognized and usable as a desktop item with seemingly no limitations, but none of my usb devices are recognized. Suggestions??? Second, I have not upgraded any firmware but have been advised to do so. Where can I get an os x firmware upgrade, and is it necessary (ie. could this be related to my usb device not working)?? Third, I would like to install 10.2 on my external HD, but am running the os on a powermac 8500, is this not a dangerous and/or futile attemp?? |

"I am currently only running 10.0 but would like to upgrade(10.2)." BTW- just caught this. you need to update to 10.1 BEFORE you can go to jag UNLESS you have the 10.2 FULL INSTALL.......... Jim |

BTW, Jag also does tend to help with those pesky USB cards....... Jim |

I agree. I have found that Jag makes the 8500 a more stable and quicker machine than earlier versions. This is especially noticable with display stuff. The 8500 does VERY well with Jag, though you might loose your sound input and have to use external speakers for volume control. Also, at least a g3. I have a g3 300 on my 8500, and although jag could use a faster proc, I have a g4 800 on my main 9500, it still works and is stable. |

As long as you have a G3 or G4 it's not a particular problem... Although there could be issues with other PCI hardware as well. In general if you are running 10.0.x successfully, then 10.2 will run better, but it does REQUIRE a G3/G4. Marty |

thanks... but what about installing jaguar. I am currently only running 10.0 but would like to upgrade. Is this dangerous considering that I am running an 8500? |

okay, First Glad to hear it!! :-) As far as firmware updates, you should go to the manufacturer of your card and check their support area. Is that card USB 2.0, are your devices 2.0?? I have some stuff that might help if it is....email me. Sorrry forgot what card you have. Use a utility called CCcloner to clone your good install of X to the firewire drive. Put that sucker on your 8500 and use the "helper disk" function, don't forget to reinstall the boot extensions. Some people have had good luck doing this with the firewire drives, others not so good. Seems to depend on the drive and the card. In my experience, I cloned a scsi external on my 9500 and threw it into my 8500 just to see if it would boot. After reinstalling boot extensions, I was looking at X, without any re-install, pretty cool. That is the easiest way to do it, and you don't have to jerk around with a reinstall. I use the external as my backup on my 9500. The 8500 is my "blow it up and fix it for fun machine". |
