I would like to run os x from an external hard drive, but cannot install to this disc because it is not bootable. I am working with a powermac 8500 and am wondering if this is possible or just a waste of time. |

Hi Kam67: Assuming you are using an external SCSI drive attached to the Mac's SCSI port you should have no problems. That is THE ONLY port I could get OS X to boot from initially! Lonnie |

Also, is the external drive attached to the built-in SCSI port, or to a PCI card? If a PCI card, which one? And what software did you use to format the drive? |

I have had good luck with external scsi disk. If it is firewire or USB, you must use XPF 3 as lyonsdj88 mentions. You need to use the "helper disk" or "boot proxy" utility to do it. There are threads that are abnout a month back on this forum where there is a lot of discussion regarding just what you are looking for. |

Are you using XPF 3, you need it to boot from FW HD. |
