when I boot up os x I get the login screen requesting a username and password, but I am using a new install and never set up either a username or a password. I have tried to enter everything I have used for login in the past with no success. Also, when I try to boot x from the cd I get a broken floppy disc picture, so I am unable to determine what the password actually is. Has anyone seen this before? Where should I begin? |

you don't say what hardware or OS version you are using, but the usual way to do this is to boot OS 9, launch XPF and use it to boot from the installation CD as though you were doing a new installation. After the installation CD boots up, you should be able to abort the installation process and set the password. On an Old World Mac, you cannot boot directly from the CD, which is why you get the broken floppy disk icon. On an Old World Machine, you can only boot into OS X after running OS 9, via XPF. Period. No alternatives. |
