Old World Modem? |

I'm that wacko that installed OS X 10.1.5 on a Performa 6360 (with PM 6500/300 logic board). I realized that OS X does recognize its serial ports, and it actually has the script for its Geoport Express Modem (why in the heck???). I was surprised and immediately tryed to set up my modem, but no go. Too good to be true. OS X recognize the ports, have the proper modem script, but it doesn't work. As a matter of fact, it doesn't work even with OS 8.x & up only with Apple Remote Access - it will only work if one installs the Apple Telecom Software, which is pre-OS 8, but runs up to OS 9.2.2 (including fax). ATS install some extensions that "wakes up" the modem (?) - at least it shows animated modem and fax icons at OS 9 startup, as if the modem were being "initialized". Anyone here can imagine a way of making this modem work under OS X? |

Marty: Sorry you have had problems with the BestData modems but I and many of my customers have had very good experience. They are just a very basic modem but like I said before the mostly work from the get go. I would be curious as to what kinds of problems you have had. Jim |

I've had some experience with "best" data modems. and none of it was good. I would rather get an older GV 56K from ebay or where ever. I don't know if the geoport thing was explained (lazy) but it will never work, as the geoport is a half baked modem at best (ie no Hayes command set compatibility without additional softwares). lyonsdj88, Actually normal self-contained modems, with their own DSP, only seems to needs the script.. Modems that depends on the CPU to work are more complicated. fixitjc, I was considering acuiring an external modem, but where I live the market is about 95% PC. Unless I can make a PC modem to work on the Mac (and work as a fax too) I may just stick to OS 9 to do my office stuff. BTW, what is the difference between "Geoport Express Modem" and "Geoport Express Modem CNG"? |

So, why is there a modem script for it? BTW modems work fine over serial in OS X, it's LocalTalk that does not. Not even on "Supported" mac's.No more AppleTalk over IR, this kills me. |

cjsconfections I was addressing voxxdigital's geoport not your modem. sorry for the confusion. The modems that used the processor had/have lots of problems and can really drag your computer speed down. I myself also use a Best Data external and recommend it to my customers. It may not be the world's best but it is generally inexpensive and works from the get go. The Apple Internal 56k V90(mine is a v90) script works just great tho I'll bet there may be a better script out there for it and one day I'll find it. Jim |

Hey Jim, I believe it worked so easily because it's a external "standalone" modem. My Geoport Express depends on the CPU to work. As a matter of fact, I really intended to use it mainly as fax. |

I have a Best Data 56k external plugged into a beige g3 running 10.2.6 in the modem serial port. It is on my wife's machine, and works in os 9.2.2 and 10.2.6. I was able to share the Inet connection to a windows laptop that I tried just for fun. I set up that machine a while ago, and I was blissfully ignorant of possible issues, and luckily I didn't have to do anything to get it to work, it just did. I have not tried that modem on my 9500, but I have my machine networked to hers, and just share inet from my enet crossover cable. |

Geoport Express? Is it the same modem found in the Performa 6360?? I don't think so... or does the two modems have the same name? |

fixitjc, Yes, I'm 110% sure that it is indeed working. I actually almost never use it for dial-up, but I use it as fax a lot. cjsconfections, Thanks for the tip. I'll check it out. |

The serial ports are not shut off in X just have no drivers, except for modems, to access them. Several linux projects have gotten them to work for serial printers and some of those drivers can be used in X but are very slow. I covered this in another post about serial printers in X (where is that serchable site I have heard so much about). I have been on a cable modem for 4 years so have not used the phone modem kicking around here someplace. Tried a Google search for "modem mac x" and got a how to from USC http://www.usc.edu/isd/doc/dialup/dialup_config_macOSX.html |

Weren't the geoport modems ones that fed off the processor? I seem to recall they had a lot of flakey problems but worked ok once you got them going. And are you sure that it is functioning completely in 9. I have recently run into several modems that may have had some run in with lightening/surge that appears to have come in on the phone line. They appear to the computer to be functional but can't communicate with the outside world. I hope I haven't confused the issue |
