I just read my post it is really confusing ....sorry... what I ment to say is that the FW/ USB drive I am using functions fine so the problem may be with the USB 1.0 version bridge in johnbclark's external drive. |

I updated to the 10.2.8 the first release and it seemed to be OK. When the second update was posted I installed it to. My question is, I lost the mount point of the 2nd partition on my boot drive and a warning came up that it couldnt mount it. (dont know if this is because of the update) I booted into 9 to see if I could recover a couple of files off the same partition in 9 and it mounted on the desktop-- copied the files, rebooted into X and this time it mounted. I am really new at X, so any ideas ?? Also anyone recomend something (ie book) to get alittle more familar with X. Thanks |

Hmmm... I seem to be having a problem getting the L2 cache initialized on my 7300, with 450 G3 upgrade... But, I don't think it's explicitly 10.2.8 related... but more with me dropping down to 25MB of HD space after the install (yeah, I know I should probably get a new HD... but i'm trying to save up for a G5!)... L2CacheConfig says it's enabled, and if I run the L2CachConfig command in Terminal, I get: "ron% sudo ./L2CacheStart kextload: /Library/StartupItems/L2CacheStart/Resources/L2CacheConfig.kext loaded successfully unload id rempel.ryan.L2CacheConfig succeeded (any personalities also unloaded)" I don't know if that means it's loaded, or unloaded, although it really feels unloaded... |

The problem may be with the LaCie 1.0 USB bridge the FW/USB vwersion works both with Apple and Taost for data and music. |

fixitjc I have had this problem for quite some time now. The bridge / case is LaCie USB 1.0, and I have swapped out three different manufacturers' CDRW (Matsushimi (?), HP, and LiteOn). Toast recognizes all three, and burns data only (no audio). Disk Copy and iTunes does not recognize either, nor does ASP. I KNOW that everything used to work fine in the past, perhaps 10.1.5, days. I vaguely remember some sort of disk update or extension that I used, but have no clue what it was. I am considering if Toast installed a kernel extension that somehow is blocking Apple software??? |

Okay, did the update and ran on my backup install on my external scsi drive. Everything seems to working exactly as it was in 10.2.6. I don't see any real difference except mpeg 1 video (I tested an oddball size for this format...640 x 480 29.9 FPS)...seems to be a bit smoother. QT and mpeg 1 have never really liked each other, and the difference is only slightly noticable. I use Candy Bar and Visage to do custom boot screens, system icons, and message tweeks (gotta have some fun... ;-) )and they have all been preserved. No hardware difference, for the better OR worse. It is difficult to report any enhancements with regard to speed as my external is the slower bus, and the drive itself is not exactly a speed demon (5400 rpm seagate elite...cheap and big, but bulletproof!). My main X drive is a 7200 rpm Seagate Barracuda on the faster internal scsi bus. Wish I could post some valid XBench scores, but I will run 10.2.8 on my slow backup for a few days until I can convince myself it is okay. If it is, I will upgrade my main X disk and post the benches as a before and after. Jim |

I have to occationally deal with the slow / choppyness ... I believe it is a RAM shortage. It started for me after I recently had to give up a 128DIMM (will replace it as soon as possible) took me down to 256. I have a LaCie CDRW but I am running it on firewire ... just tried it on USB it works there too. CD in drive shows up on the desktop. Did this no show on the CDRW start after you upgraded to 10.2.8? 8500/500G3/ 256RAM /OS 10.2.6 |

Just did the update via SW update - ...maybe... a little bit snappier Finder, otherwhise no noticeable difference yet. BTW, built in Ethernet to DSL was not apparently affected, but I still can't get my LaCie USB CDRW to be recognized by Apple (though Toast sees it fine). PM 7300/200, XLR8 G4/350, Radeon 7000, 288 MB RAM Wait... typing in this forum message is about threee to five characters behind me... and window scrolling is choppy. I am using Safari 1.0 v85.5... I'll try other sites and see... |

Well I'm still alive. After installing and restarting internet didn't work. I couldn't open the network control panel at all but after shutting down the 9600 completely and starting up again that problem was gone. I ran Xbench and the results off all test remain more or less the same. FW Webcam still works, sound in (plaintalk) still don't. |
