From the original post in this thread, I would gather that the upgrade is an XLR8 G4/450 MPe ZIF on the CarrierZIF SSE (Six Slot Edition) carrier card. So yes that would make the ZIF removable for use in a Beige G3. Just be sure to check and make sure your VRM is not a "Royal" brand, or else your shiny new G4 will not be so shiny for long. - Chibi Delennâ„¢ |

Is this on a carrier-zif card, so that the zif is removable for use in a beige G3? Or is the zif soldered to the card? You got an email address? |

Yes, This G4 is a great upgrade. I got a good eal on a Sawtooth G4 so I have sold my 9600. The buyer didn't want to "mess with anything inside" so didn't want the card. Thus it is up for sale. Scott |

For those that are watching this thread, all versions of OS X come with Altivec built in. They *all* can take advantage of a G4. Panther would be sweet, but let me tell you that going from a G3/400 to a G4/400 (yes, same clock speed) is a noticeable boost, especially in games. Just moving to a G4 at the same clock rate nearly doubles memory throughput. If you don't think this is critical, then note that on the G3/400, Elite Force was unplayable (2-3 FPS max at LOWEST settings), and with the G4/400, I can play it at a good 15-20 FPS Avg. with all settings HIGHEST except Trilinear Filtering (needs an AGP card for that to work right). For those that don't think Elite Force is a good "benchmark" game, think again. It uses the Q3A engine, and is *slower* than Q3A, and is a very VERY good benchmark, as it is more stressful on the CPU and vid card than vanilla Q3/Q3A. If you plan on using DVD Studio Pro at all, you NEED a G4. Period. There are few apps that require a G4, but if you intend to use those apps, there ya go. Panther is not a good reason to hold out for a G4. If you us OS X at all on OldWorld macs, then that alone is reason enough. You'll appreciate the difference almost immediately. - Chibi Delennâ„¢ |

I am waiting to see if Ryan can make OldWorld machines run Panther. Others possibly do the same. So it might be a while before you can move your card... |

I didn't realize that. Seems like poor customer service there. Anyway, this card does have the software etc. included. Scott |

Scott, There were a few XLR8 packages that didn't include the software, which is the only reason I mentioned the things I did. I'm glad yours coms with it all, as that makes the transition painless. :) Now if I could just test out the Daystar MSC 3.0 to see what improvements it has over 2.6.1....but I'm *not* paying $18 for it just to possibly find out it offers nothing new for me (but if it did offer enhancements of any sort, I would pay for it. I like legit things). - Chibi Delennâ„¢ |

The card does come with the software as well as the serial number to activate it. I had it running in my 9600 and had no problems. I have since sold the 9600 locally (they didn't want the G4) and have moved to a Sawtooth G4 so I no longer need the XLR8 card. That's what "COMPLETE IN ORIGINAL PACKAGING" means Chibi... Scott |

It should work in a 7300 no problems. Just install the XLR8/Daystar Mach Speed Control, assuming it does come with this upgrade package), install the card, and let'er rip. Depending on the OS you're currently using, you may need to launch the 9.0.4 or 9.1 installer and do a "custom" install of OS 9, making sure to select "none", then selecting "core system" and installing. This will install any missing Altivec libs that the G4 needs to take advantage of Altivec. If the XLR8/Daystar (sic) software is not included, you will need to either buy it, or use the free (but sometimes buggy) Powerlogix CPU Director, or Sonnet's Crescendo PCI software (please note that Sonnet's solution will NOT allow you to change settings like others' do). Or you can ask me to email you my copy of XMSC 2.6.1, which by all means you should be getting FREE with any XLR8 branded product, period. Selling a product crippled by lack of software needed to drive it is shitty, if not downright illegal in most states. Good luck! - Chibi Delennâ„¢ |
