I have been struggling to log into my fresh os 10.0 install. Here's the situation. Prior to the x install I had a fresh os 9 running on a powermac 8500. I upgraded first to 9.1, then using 9 helper upgraded to 9.2 and 9.2.2. My hard drive is 2gb, to which I then installed 10.0 successfully. However, upon restart i am guided to a Name/Password login screen. I cannot get past this page. The only such settings that I made in os 9.x I carefully noted and repeated for the x login screen with no success. I have also tried numerous other passwords to no avail. Is there a way to bypass this login screen as is. I cannot reboot to os 9 because it is on the same 2gb hard drive(not partitioned). One more note. The install cd is one I borrowed from work. Can the cd be assigned a username/password that I might not be aware of.....possibly by the original user/buyer of the cd???? Just trying to limit possible roots of action. Any help will be much appreciated. |

There are some reports that people are having difficulty booting some FW drives. Is it possible to get a cheap scsi drive, install 10 to it, then uce cccloner to move it to the FW drive?? At that point, you could use the "helper" disk function in XPF to boot from the FW drive, if it can. |

You can also restart from the OSX install CD (of the proper version) with XPF, and then use the lovely "rest password" option. Marty |

I have attempted to install os x onto an external fw hd. It's a 10gb western digital, and x is the reason that I bought it. However, I have been unsuccessful in installing for unknown reasons. I've used xpf3.0a4 but the install halts during "installing essential system software" phase, usually when its about 3/4 done (the bar is around the w in software). The strange thing is that the install never freezes or tells me of an error. Ihave waited for about an hour once this happens with no more progression of the install. Anyway, the system is definitely "asking" for a password, because when I click login the password box shakes back and forth signifying an incorrect entry. Barring further input I suppose I give the fw install another try, sounds like it's for the best |

Just to confirm what chibi_delenn is saying... You SHOULD have an extra drive for just X, especially since you only have a 2 gig drive now. They can be had VERY cheaply on ebay, you will have MUCH better success if you do. The X install can be very fragmented, and with the swap file and memory usage, that drive could get wierd fast to the point where you may not be able to boot back into 9. If you are not too familiar with SCSI, stick to a drive that you KNOW can be initialised natively in OS9. Also stick to the 50 pin drives if you are new to this, most 68 and 80 pin drives are okay, BUT it will be easier for you to stay with the 50 pin type. There are ways to do this with non-standard drives, but I will keep the info down to basics, don't want to your current headache.... ;-) If you do get X onto your current config, you are asking for trouble. |

The system shouldn't be asking for a username/password UNLESS it's asking you to *create* one. Once you've done that (that's a requirement anyway right after installing), just re-enter it if it does ask you, and you're set. To boot back into OS 9, hold down the option key as SOON as the boot chime sounds on your mac, and continue holding it until you see the familiar old style mac "grey" screen. That will let you boot into OS 9 again (as would zapping your PRAM, but this is the preferred method, as it saves all your settings). By the way, you're going to be sorry putting OS X *and* OS 9 on the same HD with only 2 GB total space. OS X uses scads for swap (I hope you have maxed your RAM, because if not, say bye bye to disk space), scratch disk space for installers (typically 100 MB+), etc. Your best bet is to procure a cheap SCSI HD and install on that separately. That not only gives you the benefit of leaving your OS 9 install safe from OS X's whorey "YOU MUST UPDATE YOUR EXTENSIONS TO USE CLASSIC" crap. Trust me, RAVE/QuickDraw 3D 1.7 *sucks* for games in regular OS 9. Separate HDs/partitions if possible. Otherwise, expect mucho headaches. - Chibi Delennâ„¢ |
