My PowerMac 8500: - G4 450 MHz upgrade (Powerlogix) - 512 MB RAM (4*128) from OWC, advertised as ok with upgraded Macs - old L2 cache module removed - internal CD-ROM replaced by Pioneer DVD-305S (SCSI DVD-ROM) - 2nd internal SCSI HD 1GB PCI cards: - ATI Radeon - Ratoc USB/Firewire I tried to install 10.2 on the second HD. I know it's small, but it was newly formatted and I just wanted to see if it works. I could run the installer, but at some point it crashed and now my 8500 is dead. Really dead. I had a DVI flatscreen attached to the Radeon, but there was no signal. I attached a VGA monitor to the original video port (with one of those 10-DIP-switch adapters). Nothing. I zapped PRAM, I even took out the little battery and let my Mac sit there completely powerless overnight. I unplugged the 2nd HD to "force" it to boot from the primary HD, which had a functioning OS9 installed and supposedly was left untouched during the OS X install attempt. I tried booting from CD. Unplugged PCI cards. But it is as if there's no CPU in the Mac. No happy or sad mac, not even a screen flicker. The most unsettling thing is that it doesn't want to boot into OS9 either and I have no access to the data on my primary HD. Unfortunately, my old PPC604 processor card is out of reach. Is there anything I can do to save this baby? Thanks, Sven |

I've used the rescue floppy method a number of times also. It usually works without having to do much else. Sometimes I have to completely strip down the machine to do it but that is rare. |

Powerlogix has a floppy disk which will reset your system... I have put a copy of it here: homepage.mac.com/mjoecups I put all the items from the reset floppy onto a folder... Copy them to a floppy and boot your system with that floppy inserted. The System folder has a bogus system which will boot enough clear your NVRAM. Good Luck, Marty |

I have an 8500 great tough machine. ... In addition to what has been suggested... remove all PCI Cards, Remove the processor, remove the battery, Press and hold the CUDA buton for 30 sec. put the Processor back in but leave the battery out for a few hours. then restart the machine. After you have a stable version of OSX running then reinstall your PCI cards one at a time. I am not an expert but this has been covered many times in this forum ..... WHERE IS THAT SEARCHABLE FORUM.... your problem has something to do with the software on the NVRAM being corrupted or something like that. keep asking questions with as much information as you can provide sometimes it is the information that you thought was non important that gives the clue we need to help. Good Luck Jim |
