7500 sound in/out success!!! |

Transplanting a 7600 main board into my 7500 has allowed sound to work again, for less than $10 off ebay. This is an easy swap, one phillips screw and 20 minutes to change out boards. Sound in/out works flawlessly in Quicktime, iTunes and iChat AV. No skips or stutters whatsoever, even when the processor is under load. Here's my setup: Newer G3/300 1MB 256MB RAM ATi Xclaim 3D Acard ATA66 card Belkin USB card Only two very minor issues: -you'll only have use of the mic/headphone jacks, the AV board is not recognized. -The internal speaker does not turn off when using the headphone jack, so pull it's connector from the board. Long live beige! |

Sound is the only real problem I have had with X |

Interesting Jim, My 9600 has no sound in,only output. But I too have an 8500 with a g3 (it is my os 9 machine for peripherals that don't work in X). I will give it a try to see if it's sound in functions. I just went through a bad time with an M Audio Revolution card thinking that it would give me sound in but have given up as it would play well on output but any attempt at input would crash the machine after a few seconds. I am trying to return the card as M Audio says that Macs with accelerator cards have problems with their cards and are not supported. BUT, Over the week end I used the 9600 in 9.2 to record some records to digital and it worked fine. I could boot to 10.1.5 with no problem but booting back into 10.2.5 had to be done with safe boot to start and then several restarts to get the sound out to function again. Sound out was dead on the first 3 boots into 10.2.5 then it started working again. Very strange, this sound beast in X. |

Just for fun, I took my external scsi drive with an install of 10.2.8 and threw it into my spare 8500 AV. ioreg -l results...(sorry if it gets hosed)...... The board is the 45mhz bus speed. In checking my 9500 w/ 50 mhz bus, I have the same stinking thing in ioreg..... The only difference iin the two boards besides the second PCI bus, is the friken AV module....any ideas????? Jim |

Ryan?). Maybe we can lick this one? Marty PS from a quick moment of research the audio chip doesn't seem like it is the issue. I still have the gut feeling, it's more a matter of having a way to set the sound in pref(for OW). |

Adaptec 2940 2 HD internal external CDRW PCI BUS Radeon 64 meg slot A1(I know-should be in slot 6, but it is fine here ;-)) Macalley FW/USB 2.0 Combo slot B1 (FW external Pioneer AO3 DVD-Wacom tablet USB) Adaptec 2940 slot C1 All this is running great in 9.2.2 AND 10.2.6. My machine is IDed as AAPL,9500(version=2.1) Any info would be cool...THANKS Jim |

At one point I thought it was a connection thing so I hooked up a Walkman with a cable that had mini-jacks on both sides into the sound in on my 9600. Works just fine in 9.1 and 9.2. When I boot into X, there is nothing. Boot back into 9 and there is the sound again. I used Amadeus on both tests since ther is a carbonized version for X and a Classic version. My guess is that it has something to do with configurations of the system (what pci cards we have when installing X or running it) and/or upgrading which changes the way that input is handled. Maybe it is an extension conflict (just kidding). But what the hell do I know, I just make chocolates. There can be no question that it is a problem for many of us though. My sound out has always worked on the 8500 and 9600. Some have never gotten any sound to work. Waiting for my M-Audio Revolution to be delivered and then scratch this issue off the list. |

Yes, the plaintalk mic works. Maybe there are different revs of this board? Maybe some revs have the same sound chip as the Beige G3? If anyone needs more info on my setup to figure this out I'll be happy to provide what I can. Mark |

Well, sound in (through the mic jack) has always worked for me under X. RCA (line out) has also always worked. Have recorded live and off tape with Sound Studio and with other shareware. Input levels just need to be kept low. Why some systems/configs work and others don't is a mystery to me. I think that is just one of those things the Steve has ordained ;-). 8600/Powerlogix G3/400/288 MB RAM. |
