How to move to 'supported' side |

I'm a satisfied user of XPostFacto fronm the early days of 'Unsupported UtilityX' on 7500/7600/G3 platforms. Now I'm going to migrate to G4 accelerated B&W G3 (w. SCSI). But how to move the current sw installation to a new machine? My HD is contains 3 partitions - one for OS9 (9.2.2!), one for X and one for VirtualPC/Windows DiskImages. In the era of MacOS 9 and it's predecessors, it was easy to move or connect the SCSI- drive to a new machine, boot and possibly use an OS upgrade or copy the contents to a another drive (and fix aliases). Questions (if I move or connect the SCSI-drive to B&W): - will the B&W boot with the current MacOS X installed either under XPostFacto or Mac OS 9.2.2 created using OS9forever-modifications - when uprading to Panther, is it ok to use the option, which saves the installed programs, users and their home directories. And what is the solution if I plan to use IDE/ATA drive as a primary boot device? |

Yes to both. Depending on you PowerLogix software, however, your g4 800 my not have the L3 cache enabled. Their newer software does... I tested just this. I have as my backup machine an 8500 with a newrTech g3 300. It had the original NewrTech software and showed up in ASP as a g3 300, L2 cache was enabled, ect. Just for kicks, I removed it and tried the Power Logx and it worked. Removing that and trying the Sonnet software, it also worked. All L2 cache was read. I use PowerLogix on that one now for tweaking reasons, but they all worked just fine. I did make sure to remove each of the "solutions" before I tried the other When I upped my main machine to a 9500, all I did was move the guts from my 8500 to it, and turn it on. I had a g4 700 at the time. When I sold that chip and upped to the g4 800, all i did was put the new chip in, picked up fine. Hope this helps, if you need more just let me know or email... Jim |

Hmmm. Interesting thread here. I have a 8600 with a Powerlogix G4/450 CPU card using L2CacheConfig while my 9600 has a Sonnet G4/800 CPU card using Sonnet's cache controller s/w. My 8600 is my main machine. I'd like to clone my 8600 HD to the 9600's HD. Would the 9600 boot up with the L2CacheConfig set for the Powerlogix G4/450 so I could reinstall the Sonnet s/w? Better yet, would the the Sonnet s/w work with the Powerlogix card so I only need one L2/L3 cache s/w app? Anybody try this type of thing? Inquiring minds.... --Dwight |

brfransen You could be correct, my newest machine is a beige g3, so I haven't had the oppertunity to play with the BnW. Thanks, I will kepp that in mind if I get one to play with. |

jseibyl, I believe that your first sentence is incorrect. The IDE drive can be pretty much any size, but X must be installed on the first partition and the first partition must be completely within the first 8GB of the drive on machines that have the bug. The B&W does not have this bug in the IDE controller's firmware and therefore, X can be installed on any size partition anywhere on the IDE drive. The affected machines include the Beige G3, Wallstreet PB and (I think) the first Bondi Blue iMac. Britney |

Just remember that your IDE drive must be >8 gigs, and the X install must be on the first partition of an IDE drive. I have an external scsi drive as my backup of jag that I go back and forth on 3 different machines, and it works pretty well for testing. |

Just my 2¢. XPostFacto does not take anything away from OS X. It simply adds some kernel extensions which allow OS X to work on unsupported machines. When a hard drive from an unsupported machine is used to boot a supported machine, OS X simply does not use the information from the now extraneous kernel extensions. I moved a drive back and forth a few times between my B&W and my 8600 without incident. I would suggest that since the B&W has IDE dirves, that you put a decent sized IDE drive in the B&W and then use carbon copy cloner to move you OS X stuff to it. Then again, this is not essential as many SCSI cards for the B&W have better perfromance than the onboard IDE. I really like my Ultra Wide card. |

I have an 8600, G4(agp) , and Powerbook. The G4 has a SCSI card and I can boot from a OS X drive from the 8600. ALSo, I can boot both the 8600 and G4 from the PB's HD in Target Disc Mode. OS 9.2.2 should be fine as long as you have "Mac OS Rom" in your system folder. |
