I had to boot into OS9 to apply a firmware update for my FW HD (did not help booting) and while attempting to boot OS9 I encountered the normal problems i have with boot 9 and now i have my computer boot OS9 but not consistantly, it will usually not boot. Anyway i started XPF and tried FW booting wiht the new firmware but it did not work so i manage my way back to OS9 and try to boot my normal OSX drive and i get a Kernal panic when it starts vitual memory. Before this crisis it booted fine, but now it does not, Am i going to have to reinstal or is there a way i can turn virtual memory off to attemp to further diagnos the problem? Thanks, Jim |

I get a Kernal panic when I try to open the file while the hard drive is mounted. Guess its a little deaper than the swap file, off to reinstall. Thanks for the help though, Jim |

Ok I am doing it now, the first time i did it i forgot to mount the drive then forgot the command so i had to restart and for some reason when i use single users mode it goes through this whole big process before it gets to the "normal" verbose. this extra process take about 5 min to do so....... |

Go SU mount your 'root' device, then:sudo pico /etc/rc :NEXT LOOK FOR THIS LINE OF TEXT: swapdir=/THIS IS THE PART THAT PIONTS TO YOUR FW DH. edit that line to look like this:swapdir=/private/var/vm .NOW ctrl+x and yes and return. now reboot(return) |

The swap file and other files have very odd prefs, you can't see them at all if you are in OS9 or OSX, even if you turn hidden files off. Strange. I was able to get into single users mode fine and i was able to delete the swap file but it still does not work, it panics at the virtual memory part... I may have to just reinstal, but i would rather not. If you have the commands for moving the swap file, that could work too. Thanks, Jim |

Without knowing what Mac and what FireWire card, but you seem positive that it will work. I've tried using OrangeMicro on Beige and it won't boot from FireWire so I'll try on BW later. (Just tried XPF 3.0 for first time too). As long as you know where swap is, you should be able to clear out the old swap0 while still in OS 9 as long as you are able to see folders that would normally be hidden. |

Did you try to boot without the FW drive? If your swap was on that drive then OS X should make a new swap on the 'root' drive if you have space on it. Make sure your 'root' drive has at least 200mb free just to be safe. If you can go single user without KP then you should be able to fix the swap if OS X won't fix it. Post back if you can go single user and I'll see if I can dig up the commands you'll need. If you can't go SU then I'll try to tell you what file to delete in OS 9 to make X make a new swap on the 'root' device. |

Xpostfacto 3 will, for some people, boot firewire. When the computer is booting OSX and it gets to the virtual memory stage it crashes, the swap files are the "virtual" memory files so by deleting them i am trying to force the system to make new ones. But now that i know where it is i should be able to delete it in single users mode, as i can get there from any disc, weather it be firewire or SCSI. Thanks, Jim |

Booting from FireWire doesn't work on B&W Macs, so I assume you have a G4 Sawtooth or later, no? I can't see why you'd want to save a swap file, let it build one, and there is only one place where it goes. /private/var/vm/swapfile0 I use Path Finder to poke around the file system. |

I have been looking for the swapfile0 but i can't find it! Sherlock finds it but when i click on it it says it now has no idea where it is! I got a utility to see hidden files but there are a few files that are still empty, i am betting that it is in one of those files. |

Ok i just tried that and it did nothing, i still get the K panic at the virtual memory loading, i think that when the drive was not ther when it check it moved the swap back to the normal boot drive. any way to delete the swap file? Where is it in the drive? |

I was thinking it was the swap file, I had moved it to the FW drive but I put it on a different partition. How would I switch it back to my swap file back to the normal drive with out booting OSX? The other odd thing is that sometimes my FW drive does not mount and is not recongnised untill i shut it off and turn the drive back on, this would imply that the swap file is still there just messed up, i could have even switched it back to the other drive. I will try to boot with the FW drive off. |

This is a new one. What disc did you use as your "helper" when you tried to boot from FW? If it was the disc you had OS X on look to see if your swap file got fubared. |
