I currently have the "good" CompUSA firewire/USB combo card and has worked well for me with my USB devices (HP printer, MS mouse) and the firewire works fine with my Panasonic MiniDV camcorder in iMovie. Anyway, I'm asking mostly out of curiosity since I'm thinking about getting an iPod (see post about iPod not working with CompUSA card). Thanks for anything you can share. My system is a 400Mhz G4 PowerTower Pro with 320 MB ram. TIA! |

kam67, It looks like the server was down earlier today, but it's working now. If copying/pasting the link doesn't work, go to the main site, click on the FireWire forum, scroll down to the heading "Firewire or USB PCI Controller Card Related Articles" and click on the link "more CompUSA combo card owner comments" Sadly, I don't think I'm willing to sink any more money into my old 7600. I may take the G5 plunge. |

So, is there a card that anyone would suggest?? Preferrably one that is fully functional but not over-priced. Tschang, thanks for the input. by the way, the website you provided seems to not have any server. |

kam67, The "good" CompUSA combo card caused a lot of excitement 2 years ago when it was on sale for $20. This is the link to comments about this card from xlr8yourmac.com: http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/firewire/compusa_firewire_usb.html CompUSA packaged several cards with the same SKU#. You had to look for the Lucent chipset with an accessory 4-pin molex connector on top. However, I would recommend avoiding this card since I haven't been able to get the FireWire to work with my 3rd Gen 15GB iPod (ironically, it works just fine with my 5 year-old Dell with iTunes 4.1). Hope this helps. 7600/120 with XLR8 MACh Carrier G3/300 ... ATi Rage Orion ... D-Link TX-530+ 10/100 base-T ... OS X 10.2.6 |

I thought I'd take a minute to say thanks for the input/help. I did get an iPod, but not the way I thought I would. My wife bought me a new 3rd gen 10GB iPod for our anniversary (Wow!). Long story short, it didn't work with the CompUSA combo card I had (per a post I read on this system), so upon finding out that it indeed didn't work, I swapped the Belkin combo card out of my PC for the CompUSA card and now it works great! :-) I'm pretty excited to have a new toy and to have it working with a system that it was never intended to work with. Thanks for the info...I have a Belkin combo card already that I'd had in my PtP before buying the CompUSA card, so I'll give it a whirl. BTW, in case anyone's interested: The bluetooth wireless keyboard using the DLink DBT-120 works great on my PtP...even the eject button on the keyboard works with my DVR-105. |

TI chipset on my Macallay combo-usb 2.0/fw400 works without any messing around. USB seems more problematic, got the usb 1.0 without problems, my USB 2.0 digital album(esentially a hard drive, probally same basic architecture as an iPod), only worked in 1.0 until I got help from here with some drivers that matched my NEC chipset. I would think that since an iPod is FW, you shouldn't have too much difficulty with one of the recommened cards, but not sure since I don't have one. What I doo know is here is a nifty little site some people here might like... http://www.ipodhacks.com You might get a quick answer on the forum here....... |

The driver I installed was for enabling the USB-2 EHCI high-speed mode. The system does recognizes it without the driver, but in USB-1.1 OHCI compatibility mode only. Unless you install OS X 10.2.7 & up, with built-in USB-2 drivers. |

I've been using Belkin USB/Firewire combo PCI cards for a while and have never had a single problem with them. One simply plugs them in and they work without installing any drivers. |

I'm using an unbranded card, with NEC chipset for USB-2 and Agere chipset for FW. USB-2 works fine, with the NEC EHCI driver; Firewire is mentioned at verbose startup, altough I don't have any FW device to test it. Stay away from the VIA chipset, it DOESN'T work on the Mac. |

if you ever have any intention of booting OSX you may look at sonnet tango cards, they should boot OSX, but it did not owrk for me... So i would say that they are teh most "suported" of the cards for our computers, but someone here must have an iPod, i would get the same card as they do, because that is what you want to use it for. |
