9600 question... |

Hi, have a friend buying a PM9600 233. He wants to throw his exsisting g4 700 into it from an 8500, and just move stuff over to it, needs the space...go figure... ;-). Does this machine have a REMOVABLE cache chip???????? I have searched and most pictures I have seen show a cache slot, just like my 9500. BUT some other sites say it is soldered on the board. Is that the "mach 5" variant or MP type???? His current install is with the Sonnet L2/L3 cache enabler, will I have to put the PowerLogic stuff on his machine to disable the onboard cache if it is stuck on the board?? |

The cache is on the processor with the 8600 and 9600. Don't put anything in that slot on the board and it'll work fine. As long as you have a processor and memory that is. |

Just a quick follow up, this 9600 machine has a removable cache chip on it. The specs are 233, I have not seen it yet, but my friend tells me he removed it, shoved his g4 700 chip in and it fired right up. So it seems there were different mobos for the 9600. I know of the mach 5 variant, so perhaps that is the revision with the soldered cache. just an interesting tid bit. Jim |

I have a Sonnet G4/800 in a 9600 which has motherboard cache. I use the XLR8 control panel to disable that cache, however the Sonnet software enables its own L2 and L3 cache with no problems. |

I have XLR8 for my g3/g4, that is another option, BUT my version does not enable L3 cache, so gotta go with something else. |

I just wish Sonnet had more tweakability. I prefer Powerlogix meself, but not my machine....... |

Fairly sure 9600/233 has the soldered on cache. Mach5 have it on the CPU card itself.Powerlogx it is. The sonnet does disable the onboard cache but it loads too late half the time you get a boot freazzzzzz.Or try to put a bullit in front of the name of the sonnet ex. so it loads first. |
