Superdrive DVD software |

I'm running 10.2 on a beige g3 (without xpf) and was recently lucky enough to get my hands on a pioneer dvd r/rw, cd r/rw drive. I removed the stock cd-rom and just slipped in the superdrive. After rebooting the system I found that the cd player (itunes) works fine but inserting a dvd just displays the cd and name(correctly) but the system has no software to open the media. what software do I need to get (perhaps iDVD ), Is such software not included in os x, or do I need to upgrade from 10.2. The pioneer software is windows compatible only, but the drive itself is, according to my research, a.k.a the G5 superdrive. The model is pioneer dvr-a03. Thanks for the help. |

I am using a Firewire version of the A03, it works VERY well with Toast. It normally WON't play DVD's etc on this MAC, unless you use the method described here, or run VLC (video LAN client) which is not as good as DVD Player.app. |

If you could post a bit more information, I could understand your exact situation better. I am in the similar situation to your recent one, and I am looking to buy a dvd burner, and wondering what set up I need. I have suggestions below (lengthy, but just to be clear given a little confusion on my part). It seems that the drive is recognized, and is functioning for some things. When you say that iTunes works fine, I take that to mean that you can use it to open a music disk, make mp3s and, importantly, burn cds. Can you use the application diskcopy (inside the utilities folder of the applications folder) to burn a CD? You should be able to do this too. On the DVD side, you should have the application "dvd player" in Applications folder. That will allow you to play movie dvds. As lyonsdj88 says, you will need hook your monitor to one of the video cards that he mentions for dvd movie play back to work. Since the name of the dvd is shown on your desktop, to me, that indicates that the dvd is recognized, and you can use data dvds to move the data from the superdrive to your hard drive (like the dvds they give you with MacWorld and MacAddict magazines when you buy them). There are several ways to go to burn dvds, which idvd can do. The application idvd is part of iApp suite and is not included with 10.2, and neither is it a free download (but is on your hard drive if you buy from Apple a computer with a superdrive). You have to buy the iApp CD, which is $50. The idvd application (I understand) takes up 1.7 GB of space on your HD (compact it is not). Its main advantage is that it integrates beautifully with iPhoto, iTunes and iMovie, (the rest of the iApp suite). It is mainly designed to burn movies from iMovie, so if you use a digital video camera, I believe that it has real advantages. However, I understand that Toast 6.0 can also burn movies from iMovie. It is more an all round application for use both on CDs and DVDs. The lowest price I have seen is $67, but what the current price is, I do not know. I have not seen a real comparison of idvd and toast features, so some investigation will be required if you try to decide on one piece of software (post back, I would like to see it!). However, if you want to test to see if dvd burning works, I would try the application diskcopy to burn an image onto a blank dvd. Since the superdrive is recognized in your case, and I assuming that it burns cds, I am wondering why a new installation would be requried to generate dvd burning capability. I guess I would try to zap the pram first, before a new installation of OS 10.2. Good luck! |

You should not have to reinstall OSX to get DVD support. Just the proper hardware. Some versions of iDVD didn't like burners that weren't on the internal (IDE) bus. I think newer versions fix this. Try toast and see what it thinks. Marty |

I have a 9600/300 with Sonnet 800 mhz G4 upgrade card and 1.38 gb ram. The stock 24x CD-ROM would not read CD-R's so I swapped it for a Pioneer AO5 DVD-R/CD-R from OWC. It would not take the iDVD software until I did a re-install of OSX. I had it on a SIIG PCI/IDE card at first which showed it as SCSI to ASP. I had to change the card to a Tempo Ultra Tek ATA 133 before DVD player would work too. I had to use Video LAN Client player before that, but iDVD would not install until I had it on a true IDE card. I run my 120 gb hard drive on the SCSI type SIIG card because I don't have the first 8 gb partition problem to live with. |

Pacifist..........http://www.charlessoft.com/ .............Now everything else should just work as A03 should be seen by DiscBurn as Supported I.E. You can Burn CD's DVD's from the Finder or DiscCopy for DATA or .DMG and .img. And iTunes for audio cd's iDVD if you have a G4. If you have no G4 then you will need Toast 6 to make DVD's. |

If you are looking for DVD Playback software you'll need a Rage128 or Radeon pci video card in you Mac. You need the Apple DVD Player.app, it is on your 10.2 CD, but you will need a tool for installing...MacOS X 10.2 Jaguar Installer didn't install Apple DVD Player 3.1.x even if I have a DVD-ROM. Even if Apple DVD Player 3.1.x (ADP) has no machine check, MacOS 10.2 Jaguar Installer check for your machine ID, and if your Mac has no DVD native support will not install ADP. BTW you can install it manually using Pacifist: Run the "Pacifist" application and open Mac OS X (10.2 JAGUAR) Install Disc 1/ System/Installation/Packages/Essentials.pkg Expand the Package Contens and Click on DVD Player.app. Click on Install to install it |

i'm hesitant to do a fresh install of 10.2 again. It seems to be working very well at present and I don't see why the os wouldn't recognize the dvd when it does recognize the dvd. There must be another way. I've had trouble with an earlier install of 10.2 (from the same cd) and reinstalling is my last option. Any other suggestions??? |

You need to do an install of OS X 10.2 from CD with the DVD-R inside of the machine, that way the installer knows that there is a DVD drive in the computer. Whether it'll play on a beige G3 or not, that's another story. Definitely not supported, but give it a shot! |
