I'm running a 7300 with G4/700 Upgrade. OS9.2.2on one Drive and OSX.2.8 on another drive,(ATA80GB). More for convenience than anything I am wondering if it is at all possible to run my LW360 natively in X. It appears that the printer is available in the print Center, under IP, but i have had no success in getting the Computer to recognise the printer at all in OSX...I have tried the Gimp Print ghost software, also with no success...It isn't really a bother to boot back into OS9 to print, but hey you guys seem to get virtually anything to run on nearly everything, so I kind of figured there was no harm in asking.... Everything I am running appears to be extremely stable, so thanks guys for the opportunity to be able to run everything that should not be running on my little Ole 7300...Keep up the great work...With gurus like you around its a pleasure to be using a computer...Especially a mac. 7300/180 w G4/700 a-card6260BigClaw scsi4GB+ata 80GB FireWire/USB Radeon 7000 Thanks in advance Ben |

I, too, have 360's running on X. I use to use an iPrint. But, after going wireless with a Linksys WET11 bridge, which doesn't pass AppleTalk, I'm now using an Axis 5400 (10/100) for one 360 with the AXIS providing a LPR capability attached to the 360's parrallel port. The Axis line supports EtherTalk. (The Axis 540 supports 10baseT while the 5400 supports 10/100baseT.) I have an older Axis 560 (10baseT) which has two parallel and one serial (COM) ports. My other 360 and an Epson 860 are attached to this Axis print server's parallel ports. Finally, my olde Epson 800N sets on the network, too, for any of the computers to use. So, all the Macs, one PC and a SGI Indy can print to the 360s whether on the wired or wireless portion of my home network. Highly recommend Axis print servers. Oh...yes...and Gimp Print, too. --Dwight |

I use an old performa 475 with the laserwriter bridge software, and an ethernet adapter installed. This converts the ethernet to the localtalk. Marty |

Nick is correct. Two choices: Ethernet/LocalTalk bridge like AsanteTalk Print Server connected by Ethernet I have had good luck with Axis products. Their 540+ print server supports postscript printers and apple talk. Connect directly to the centronics port and then connect via Ethernet to a hub or directly to computer using crossover cable. Found several on Ebay recently for less than $30 (usually run $130-$150 new) Though a different printer, I still print daily to a Laserwriter 630 that I bought nearly 10 years ago. Good Luck Ed |

Nick got it but there are other options if you trust EBay. I have purchased a couple of appletalk/ethernet converters(bridges) on EBay and they cost $15 and $20 respectively. While Asante is probably the best, I have purchased Dayna/Intel Etherprint 3's and they work fine. Be careful not to pick up one of the "Friendly nets" as they just convert AAUI to RJ45 for printers that have the ethernet built in. Now, if you have the ethernet built in (I believe it was an option on some 360's), then those converters are cheap and reliable and the way to go. |

Thanks Nick for your time. Your advice is valued. I too have been toying with USB, but I figured it was worth asking the question..it's a shame really because the laserWriter really is a very good reliable printer..I guess unless someone comes up with a good enough reason to warrant running LW in OSX, the only real option will be USB.. Many thanks. Ben |

Unfortunately OS X does not support LocalTalk (AppleTalk over serial ports). I can think of two ways to use your LW360 under OS X, a LocalTalk to Ethernet bridge e.g. AsanteTalk or AsantePrint, they are expensive new (~$80) but you can probably pick a secondhand one up cheap. Secondly, an Ethernet print server which supports parallel port printers. There are many different models of print server available but again the cost is hardly justified by the value of the printer unless you can find a cheap secondhand one. I think putting the money towards a USB inkjet printer probably makes more sense although inkjet consumables costs per page will be higher. |
