Most Compaq OEM drives are made by Seagate, BUT beware, some of them WILL NOT be seen by a MAC, proprietary firmware. If you go that route, you might need speed tools to low level format the prick, as apple drive setup won't see it, and FWB is not a good choice to try to format a disk to be seen in jag. Stick to the drives on EBay that are for mac, save yourself the cost of aspirin latter, but it sounds like you already know that..... Jim |

I have a Belkin FireWire / USB 2 PCI card that is technically unsupported on the Mac. However, Belkin tech support says it *should* work. So for this case, let's assume it won't work for booting. I really don't want to have to rely on another PCI card, as that's just one more thing that can fudge the whole process. I'm going to do more hunting for some SCSI hard drives, but I haven't turned up anything useful yet. eBay has a couple of Compaq 9.1 GB SCSI drives... used. There's no way I'm putting my trust in something by Compaq, let alone a used drive. |

With the latest release of XPF (3.0a4) you can boot from Firewire drives using a small SCSI disk or partition as a "Helper" device. From what Ryan has said many dedicated Firewire PCI cards seem to be compatible with booting so you could try installing a cheap FW card and giving it a go. Having your ATA drive in an external FW case makes it more flexible and useful and transfer rates over FW are high enough that you'll hardly sacrifice any performance compared to installing a PCI ATA controller. Ryan did caution that FW/USB combo cards except those made by Sonnet seem to be problematic as far as booting is concerned. |

"Is there such thing as an ATA to SCSI adapter? I have a 60GB drive here that I have in an external firewire bay that is completely untouched. I'd love to use this puppy." Is that drive FW?? |

You can find some older Atlas drives for good price ($39 Atlas 10K II 9GB, needs adapter for 68-to-50) and has worked great in my 7300. 10K and 8MB cache and Atlas drives have good high sustained reads. http://www.hypermicro.com |

"It's a SCSI 4GB on the internal chain at ID 0. 9.1 is installed on this drive, which is the destination disk. " Thanks for the info, that makes it clearer. Your problem is that you are trying to install X onto a drive that has an exsisting OS9.1 install residing there. That is just asking for trouble. You need a completely fresh partition, or drive to install jag of at least 3 gigs to do it comfortably. Ryan's notes are very clear about recommended installations, and they should be followed I would say got to ebay, and get yourself another drive that will fit onto your chain, You can get a 9 gig 7200 rpm drive for ~15 bucks that will solve your trouble. If you don't want to spend any more money, than live with the machine the way it is, even if you were to partition that drive, you prtobally would not have enough space to comfortable run X. |

It's a SCSI 4GB on the internal chain at ID 0. 9.1 is installed on this drive, which is the destination disk. I'm installing it from a SCSI CD-ROM on the same chain at ID 1. The HD is formatted with HSF+ using Apple Drive Setup, fresh 9.0 install, upgrade to 9.1. ASP lists the hard drive as follows: Driver version: 8.1.4 Mac OS partitions: 1 Removable media: No Vendor: IBM Revision number: S65A Product ID: DCAS-34330 Serial number: B4SF3691595 Size: 4.32 GB (1K = 1000) Capacity: 5 GB (1k = 1024) -- Volume format: Mac OS Extended (HSF+) Capacity: 4 GB Available: 4.36 GB Percent full: 13 Write protected: No Is being file shared: Yes There are now 4 64MB (256MB) DIMMs at A2, B2, A4, B4. There were two more 32MB DIMMs at A6 and B6, but those have been removed in an effort to find the problem. I've torn just about everything I can out of this computer. It's as bare-bones as I can possibly get it. The Zip drive has been unplugged, the old ixMicro video card has been added back in, the extra PCI cards have been removed. The only different in this box than an off-the-shelf is the additional RAM (and lack of included RAM) and the Sonnet 700 Mhz G4. Is there any other information I can get for you? I'd rather not cut my losses here, as it's a good amount of money. |

When I use Sonnet's PCI X Installer with the 10.2 full install disk, I get the big grey apple logo, then it just goes into a "no smoking" sign - without the cigarette of course. This is really pissing me off. I've spent a lot of money on this already. Could it be the RAM? When I got it, there are additional 64MB cards in the computer, along with the 2 32MB cards included with the computer. |

I just got my hands on a 10.2 full install disk. No luck there. Same error. The Hard Drive is 4GB, not partitioned. I know I need to have the install on the first 8 GB of the drive, which shouldn't be a problem here since I have only a 4GB drive. |

As I remember it, OS10.0 has no SCSI support. You need the full install 10.1 disk to get the drive recognized. I called Apple on this one as I had purchased 10.0 & the 10.1 upgrade disk but could not do an fresh install of 10 & upgrade on a SCSI disk. Apple eventually sent me a free 10.1 full-install disk as a patronage thing. Annoying, isn't it. |

Fair enough This is a 9600 I got on eBay for just about nothing. It's been tweaked to hell, but I've taken all the extra BS out of the computer, with the exception of the additional RAM added to it. I added a Sonnet Crescendo G4 700 MHz and an ATI 7000. That's it. Completely reformatted the internal, 4GB SCSI drive using Drive Setup and installed everything fresh. Made the jump from 9.0 to 9.1 (only had 9.0 installer), installed Xpostfacto and tried again. Same message. It happens at startup at the grey screen. I'm trying to install 10.0 as I have no other fresh install disks, only updaters for 10.1 and 10.2. I can't think of anything else. |

Your going to have to be more spesific. What computer do you have, what upgrades, when does the error happen, what OS are you installing... |
