QuickTime 6.4 messed up my system !? |

Hi guys, everything was running smooth with 10.2.8, until I thought it might be a good idea to take advantage of the new Quicktime 6.4. BAD IDEA! Now my system does not fully boot anymore, it is stuck with a blue OSX colored background and the mouse pointer, which I'm able to move. I miss that window with the progress bar during startup and, of course, a complete boot-up. Since I'm on a 9600 with a G4/450, I cannot simply boot from the OSX- CD. :/ Any hints are appreciated to ged rid of QT6.4 and make my system work again without reinstall. Thanks, Ebbi |

We are in the process of revising the Java 1.4.1 download to provide better compatibility with changes made in other recent Apple software updates. Check back here for up-to-date information on the status of the Java 1.4.1. download. HHHMMMMM........ right from that link. I wonder what is REALLY going on here........... |

Now there is an update for Quicktime for Java by software update....lol "................ includes support for using QuickTime 6.4 with either Java 1.4.1 or Java 1.3.1. This update is recommended for everyone using QuickTime 6.4 in order to maintain application compatibility." Could some folks have reported having trouble with their latest update??? :O) Jim |

I tried the update to QT 6.4.....NO issues at all, seems to be a bit zippier actually, especially for mpeg 1 video, the achilles heal of video on mac. I tested a non-satndard file (640 x 480 mpg1). For comparision, my system... pm9500 g4 800 1 gig RAM main scsi 2 HD's stock cdrom external db25 scsi 1 HD PCI A1 radeon 7000 64 meg B1 macally fw USB 2.0 combo C1 adaptec 2940UW 2 HD's internal 1 CDRW external I know I should put the radeon on the bottom slot, but this system is stable as it is, so haven't felt the need to mess too much. If it would help to get the ioreg output to see if there is any diff in why QT is bombing, email. Hope you get that machine back up. Any luck with the suggestions here?? |

Okay, Just a thought.....I am current on java 1.4.1 running 10.2.8, so I will install QT 6.4 on my backup to see what happens.... If I can duplicate the issue, the fsck -y and Disk Warrior (DW has saved my butt MANY times)..... |

This sounds like the same thing I experienced when I tried to upgrade from 10.2.6 to 10.2.8 (standalone installer, 2nd release) with an appearance theme installed. I could never get beyond the blue screen and movable cursor, either. I had to resort to installing a backup boot drive with 10.2.6 already installed on it, and cloning it onto the damaged volume. Then I removed the theme changer and restored aqua and I was able to complete the OS upgrade with no problems, followed by QuickTime 6.4, with (knock on wood) no problems after a few days of using it. And I checked, I am running Java 1.4.1. And the theme works great in 10.2.8, too! Bri UMAX J700-G4/800-784MB-UltraATA/66-160GB/3 IDE HD |

As a general rule I don't do the direct software update from the site I use the "download to desktop" feature or go to the Apple site and get the complete Combo download. I have found that way to be more stable and less troublesome. I rarely have any trouble with my trusty 8500 tho it is currently making it known it is not pleased with the recent memory downgrade We went from 384 to 256 - Had a customer in a dire situation. I will go back to 384 or even 512 as soon as possible. It is really doing the memory/hd switcheroo a lot without the extra RAM. 8500/500G3/256/CD/CDR/& 4 HD (2-9gig, 2-47gig) |

Jim As far as I Know I am current on all software including Java. I remember installing the Java 1.4.1 update back in September. The Java folder contains both 1.3.1 and 1.4.1 items. Hope that helps. I try to stay current on all the updates (within a week of release) after I am sure there are no bad bugs like there were in 10.2.8 which I am now running installed from the combo installer. Jim |

Got this from apple..... "Note to QuickTime for Java Users on Mac OS X v10.2: If you are using QuickTime for Java with Java 1.3, you should not upgrade to QuickTime 6.4 at this time." Didn't dig any deeper, but this could be the issue....... Jim |

hmm, I just had a huge data loss on friday. My whole Desktop folder was emptied. This would have also been after 6.4. I originaly thought it was a drive problem, however, the drive seems ok-ish. Spent bleedin' ages getting my stuff back. Anyway, I've also been having intermittent freezes on a fresh system, turns out QT 6.4 was reacting violently to some of the third-party plugins. So maybe that's your problem, fixitjc. Notes4Me, if fsck-ing doesn't work, I'd suggest trying Diskwarrior. That usually fixes this kind of thing for me, I find it indispensable. |

In case you don't know to boot into Single User restart and at the chime hold down "Command S" after it finishes all the UNIX gibberish you type "fsck -y" make sure you get the space between the "k" and the "-" then press enter it will go through it's thing and if it finishes with something like "Disk has been Modified" re-run "fsck -y" again untill you get no "Disk has been Modified" statement when fsck is done then you can type either "exit" or "reboot" then press "enter" Good luck Jim |

Try single user mode. first run fsck. then run "sudo diskutil repairPermissions" I don't know if Safe Mode will keep verifying a drive until any errors are eliminated or not. Why can't you hold down option key and go back to OS 9? or boot from an OS 9 CD. (You don't want to do so if journaling is enabled though). There are tips on how to move an extension out of System/Library/Extensions/ to your home directory, assuming someone knows what is triggering this :-( |

Thanks, Jim! I tried that, but still no joy. I can see the small start screen with the progress bar for the blink of an eye, saying: "Safe mode. Extensions disabled". But when the progress bar is on the right, I end up with the blue OSX screen with a moveable cursor. :( Ebbi |

First try booting with the shift key held down this will run a repair sequence and bring your machine up in "Safe Boot" then repair the preferences and see if that doesn't fix your problem..... if that doesn't help I'm sure there will be many more suggestions. I installed 6.4 with no problem on an 8500/G3-500 with not enough RAM.... Due to the shortage of RAM I am getting occational freezes. I am beginning to believe that with each software upgrade we need to add more RAM.... ;o) Jim |
