Hi folks, any help would help. I've read the post about the wallstreet here, and it seems like the same problem, but i wanted to see if there were any other thoughts/options. I'm getting the 'can't write to NVRAM' error shortly after starting the install. I've tryed all the suggestions I've seen other than a new harddrive and RAM. it runs 9.2.2 fine. thanks in advance. |

Well, I've tried other XPF versions, and a 10.0 install disk, and everything I do I still get the 'cant write to NVRAM. Guess it's time to try new RAM. any specifics that X likes better than another? (it's been said to be finiky) |

Most of the Mac's XPF supports are OF Ver 1.0.5 where as Beige and PB's use later 2.x.x OF, so there can be bugs. I've gotten the "Can't Write to NVRAM" error on my 8600, but can't remember what solved the trouble. May be something in OS 9 so try OS 9 ALL exe. set. |

I'm using 2.2.5. When I had the problems with 10.2.8, I went back to what I knew had worked previously. Now that you mention it, I was getting an occasional error with XPF 3.0a4. After telling it to rewrite the Extensions and BootX and restart, 3.0a4 would refuse to quit. After force quitting it, I would get the error, "Cannot write what you asked because of a Disk error", or something like that. It didn't happen all the time. Interesting. |

Could be a Bug in XPF, Tom what ver. of XPF do you use? Chris try to use differant Ver.'s and see if that helps. |

Has it ever run X? If not, and you have the earlier versions freely available, go ahead and try it. It certainly can't hurt and possibly might help. One other thing to try would be to disconnect ALL power, including the P-ram battery, for a few hours. X does weird things to the P-ram on these old computers. Next would be exchanging the ram with known working ram. Good Luck. |

Thanks for the idea Tom, I did on a whim try install w/o XPF, and just got the grey apple screen, and nothing else. It is a 10.2 install disk though. Is there any chance installing 10.0 or 10.1 and upgrading to 10.2 would be any better? |

I can't help it, I've got to say it. Have you tried the install without XPF? As far as I know, all Wallstreet G3 SERIES laptops are supported with 10.2. The PowerBook G3 KANGA 250 MHz is the only G3 not supported by 10.2. I have a Kanga, with a maxed out 160MB of ram. XPF works with a Kanga, I don't know about a Wallstreet. I don't know what's going on with the other 'Street on this board either, but, they shouldn't need XPF for 10.2. Now 10.3 is a different story. I was looking through the extensions folder in 10.3 today, it appears that Apple has completely redone the Video drivers. This does not bode well for getting 10.3 on our laptops. I sure hope Ryan can sort things out. I might try a cloned 10.3 system on my Kanga tomorrow just for S&Gs. If you've tried the normal install of 10.2 already, sorry, but I just had to say it..... ;-) |

It is with XPF that I'm trying to install X. I seem to remember when X came out, the 250 was unsupported while the others were (supposedly). I did set up 2 partitions, with 9.22 on one, and am trying to get X on the other-sounds like RAM is the other thing to try?...... any other ideas?...... |

If you installed w/ 9.21 disc without OS 9 helper support, then the question is possibly one of RAM or perhaps one of those weird powerbooks that needs XPF in order to install OSX in spite of the fact that theorectically you should be able to install. It shouldn't hurt anything to try and install with XPF ... the other issue is that many of us like to partitions OS 9 away in its own separate partition and if you have enough room a different os 9 install in another partition to run classic with OSX. In orther words, three partitions. But you can get away with two. Apple sells these new world computers with os9 and osx on the same partition but problems can result from that. |

I have a 9.2.1 install disc, and updated to 9.2.2 from the apple site, so I believe I'm running natively? as for the Ram limit, I'll go check out Mactracker to see... |

If you have the powerbook called "hooper" on Mactracker, then I would doubt you have enough RAM to install (?160 mb Max?). Also, are you running 9.22 natively, or do you use OS 9 helper? In other words, can you boot up with a 9.22 CD? |
