I have 4 or so different macs, all based on the 6400 mobo (iirc). A powertools infinity, a c600, and a 6400 are the ones I want to install XPF on. The installer hosed the powertools and the 6400, but I was able to recover the c600 into OS 9.1 by zapping the pram. any clues as to what I am doing wrong? While I understand that these machines are really borderline, surely XPF is not meant to kill them completely. Ideas? Help? |

I just tried XPF 2.2.1 on my StarMax 3000/160 with NewerTech G3/L2 upgrade. The exact wording of the error message is: XPostFacto does not know how to patch NVRAM for AAPL,e826 |

I think the problem with the Powertools Infinity and the C600 is that they are not supported by XPF yet. Both are based on a version of the Tanzania logicboard. This is the same logicboard that is in the Starmax 3000/4000 series and Powermac 4400 (with a few modifications). The work on XPF support for the PM6400 will likely help in getting the Tanzania Macs and clones, but there could still be some differences. I have a couple of Starmaxes, and I have tried to install with XPF. I got an error message that XPF does not know how to write to the NVRAM. I used ResEdit to modify XPF into thinking my machine was supported. It then tried to begin the install but crashed with a black screen. Had to zap the NVRAM many times to get back to Mac OS 9. Here are some links to Tanzania based clones: http://www.lowendmac.com/supermacs/c600.shtml http://www.everymac.com/systems/powertools/infinity/ infinity3200.html |

There was a report of some success at http://www.zone6400.com a little while ago. I haven't had a chance to get back to my 6500 recently. Basically, there appear to be a couple more bugs I need to find--I don't know what more to say than that :-) Your comment about throttling is interesting. In theory, the throttling should have no effect on the 6500--I'll follow up to see whether there is a bug in that part of the process. |

since I am able to salvage the c600 when it dies, i have tried a bunch more times to get it to work, all to no avail. The most I have been able to do is get it to display the Open Firmware screen on bootup, which looks like this: ————————————————————————————————————— bootr, unknown word_ Open Firmware, 2.0 To continue booting the MacOS type:_ BYE To continue booting from the default boot device type:_ BOOT_ ok 0 > _(underscore here is a cursor) ————————————————————————————————————— now, when i type BOOT, the CD drive spins up, it makes a reboot chime, and a gray screen comes up with ————————————————————————————————————— CLAIM failed_ ————————————————————————————————————— after which I hard-reboot it, since it is locked, and get the same Open Firmware screen as above. if I type BYE, it flashes something really quick about "resetting," then flashes the missing-system-folder-floppy-icon-of-death, and then boots into MacOS 9.1 This happens again and again. The settings that seem to work for me are setting the input device to the keyboard, the output to the monitor, and disabling throttling, since it tends to blackscreen on me otherwise. I realise there is flaky-to-none SCSI support for these machines, so how would I install OS X? Should I try to dump files directly onto the hard drive through a network connection? The only access I have to the machine is swapping out the HD (since its IDE controller only supports one drive), changing SCSI devices, or getting stuff via my LAN, which it does with the ethernet card in teh comm slot. Removing the ethernet card does not change anything. I would get a bootable IDE CD drive if the machine could support it, but due to the ancient IDE arch it has (slaves not supported), I could then no-longer copy files onto an IDE hard drive. Is there any way to install XPF for me? |
