Sound output from 10.2 on pre-G3 Mac |

Was also unable to get sound output 99.999% of the time when using 10.2 on an IDE hard disk connected to the Tempo ATA100 in my PowerMac 9500. However, after reading Ryan's (Ryan = OSXGuru, right?) suspicion (RE: Sound Output Problems with XPF 2.2 & 10.2, August, 26, 2002 2:05 PM) that the cause is due to the ATA card, I'd kept all the hardware config the same, installed 10.2 onto my internal 2GB SCSI hard disk, and VIOLA! I've now got sound from 10.2 on my legacy Mac! Well, most of the time at least. Alert sounds work find, iTunes plays fine (although if you run another active process, the music will skip) and QuickTime movies are no longer imitations of old silent movies! However, I did encounter a loss of sound a couple of times ... not sure the cause, but rebooting resolves it. BTW, sound is indeed fixed at a certain level ... changing the output volume or even muting it has no effect, but volumes can be changed within other apps, such as the volume for alert sounds, iTunes, QuickTime, and, of course, via the volume control on external speakers. I'm now waiting for a reply from Sonnet about a possible solution (e.g., an OS X-native Tempo AV Tool) ... will keep you updated. |

Full sound support is a problem. As you've already encountered the fixed at- maximum system sound output level. I sometimes forget about this and when I reboot, it creates hell of a distorted sound off my external speakers. |
