Hello! I have a 233MHz Rev. A Beige G3 running MacOS 9.1. I cannot get GNU-Darwin to install on this machine. I run XPostfacto and tell it to install from the GNU CD onto the first 7.9GB partition on my 60GB IDE Hard Drive. Currently, OS9.1 is on the fourth partition. When I click install, XPostFacto seems to copy all the necessary files to the first partition and then reboots the computer. Nothing happens after the reboot chime...blake screen, no disk activity after the initial spinup. The only way to recover is to reboot and zap the PRAM. The only upgrade to this computer is a Keyspan 2-port USB card. Any help in resolving this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Chris |

I have pretty much the same problem here. I kept getting kernel panics - "unknown exits". It must have happened 10 out of 11 times. That time it started installing and the energy saver put the macine to sleep. I have 416 mg memory with VM on. I have heard there is a problem with add-on memory, so I checked using Tech Tool Pro, which says my (the computer's) memory is OK. Bought it from Small Dog. I have a Belkin Firewire/USB card which the installer recognizes. There is a video card, but since I bought the machine second hand, I don't know exactly which. It was purchased through the Apple Store, though. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks |

I cannot get the GNU-Darwin Install CD to boot with or without XPostFacto. I get the same results on a Rev B Beige G3 w/400MHz G4 upgrade that installed OS X without a problem. I am going to be doing some cross platform application development for XWindows/MacOS/Windows and needed to install GNU-Darwin. Unfortunately, our corporate IT has been assimilated into the Microsoft collective, making upgrading to a newer Mac/OSX almost impossible. If you have any suggestions, I'll give them a try b/c I will NOT give in and go over to the Dark Side! |

The other thing is that I haven't looked at the GNU-Darwin CD--I'm not sure whether there is anything special about it that I need to deal with. |

This machine should work without XPFacto. Have you tried it? I'm under the impression that mostly Beige G3's upgraded with G4 's are the one's that need XPF . |
