10.2 Freezes When Using a Broswer |

10.2 literally freezes when I'm using a broswer - IE, Mozilla or Chimera. However, it doesn't freeze using any other application, yet. I've got an 8600/200 with Powerloigx G4/450 750MB RAM, 10.2 running off a partition on a drive on the internal SCSI buss. I updated a copy of my 10.1.5 system which was running on a PCI SCSI controller disk. Any thoughts? --Dwight |

i'm running 10.2 on a 9600 and had a lot of freezing trouble not only in the browser i've got an XLR8 G4 MPe 450MHz processor running at 498MHz turned out to be my asante 10/100 ethernet card, as soon as i removed the card and drivers no more crashes also, i've got 4 x 128 edo dimms and 2 x 64 non-edo dimms (none are interleaved) who says don't mix up your dimms! so far so good..... |

I had all kinds of crashes/freezes with my XLR8 Mach MPe G4/450 card as well. It even froze with the most expensive DIMM's that I bought from RamJet. I finally convinced OWC to swap out the XLR8 card for a Sonnet 450/G4 and the same DIMM's that were freezing the XLR8 card work just fine with the Sonnet card. I agree that the XLR8 card had some sort of design deficiency or maybe it was just pushing the memory bus too fast. The Sonnet cards slow down the memory throughput somewhat, but I don't care as long as the machine is stable. Haven't had one freeze since switching to the Sonnet 450 card. |

I ran Gauge Pro and all of my DIMM's checked out. No defective RAM and I was still getting the freeze. What actually seems to have fixed it for me was the change from my XLR8 G4 450 MPe SSE card to the new Sonnet 800 Card. I swapped out the cards, re-interleaved my RAM and booted up immediately without any problems. Classic is launching again and the freeze seems to have disappeared, though I've only been running the new card for a couple days. I think there may be something about the XLR8 cards that causes problems. I had to de- interleave my RAM just to get this card to boot with any OS, whereas my previous NewerTech G3 and my new Sonnet both work great with RAM interleaved. Ironically, I got the XLR8 card because it promised even more compatibility with my machine than other cards... |

i ran GURU too, and i found a 64 MB chip that was bad. sucks, but at least it should make my mac more stable- i haven't had a crash since i did the tests. it took forever in an 8500, but i took all the chips out and replaced them one by one, starting with the biggest chips and working my way down. now, i just need to find out where the heck i bought the 64 MB chip from (about 5 years ago...) so that i can return it to them. lifetime warranty, but it's only good if you remember where you got the damn thing... |

Macfixit had an error on their link - google found it for me. I think that I'll test my ram before doing any upgrade! Stephen |

Does anybody know where to find Newer's memory test software? Is it available for download someplace? Stephen |

Solved! It was a memory module. The good news is that my Powerlogic G4/450 card is running at 473MHz at a buss speed of 52.5MHz. Life is good! Now...onto other problems. --Dwight |

I booted into 9.1 and ran Newer's memory test program. Sure 'nough, I've got a bad module. Now, since I got 6 RAMM Sticks, this is going to be fun. Does anybody know how to decode the error memory address, which is reported at fault, so as to isolated the error to a stick? Ryan, as ususal , I am not worthy... Good call. --Dwight |

GX77 message about cold boot to 9 only: I had similar problems on 10.1.5. My setup was: SCSI drive on internal bus had classic. ATA bus had X. Changing ID on SCSI to something other than 0 (I did #6) allowed me to cold boot X. Stephen |

having the same problem, except I'm using nearly all OWC memory, which they say is beyond the minimum specs that apple sets... I don't want to try taking chips out and replacing them to see what the problem is, cause i have an 8500, and although i've gotten quite good at removing EVERYTHING just to get at the damn ram chips, it still takes me upwards of 20 minutes to pull everything apart and put it back together, plus 5 minutes to boot into 9.1.2, then X just to see if it's still working. A HUGE HASSLE... It would be nice to be able to "cold boot" into X, but i'm sure if it were possible, ryan would have made it work long ago. |

IE Froze up about an hour after I posted my last msg. Grrrrrr! I've got a Powerlogix PowerForce G4/450 card using the Control Cache X 1.2 (or is it Cache Control?...anywho). Since I have 6-128MB memory modules (756MB RAM total) with the last two interleaved, there might be a memory problem. I haven't up-clocked the Powerlogix card, and it's been running solid since day one (March 2001). OK. Tonight, I'll take it down & remove 2 of the memory modules and/or move them around. Film at 11! --Dwight |

PS - I don't know if this is helpful or not, but I seem to have the most trouble with freezing trying to load a page after I've loaded a page that contains a java applet... |

I think Ryan may be right about it being a RAM or other hardware related issue. There is nothing else wrong with my setup that I'm aware of and yet after posting my previous message, I froze again. I wonder if it might be the XLR8 card I have as well - it was finnicky with OS 10.1 and I wouldn't be surprised if it is causing more problems with 10.2... I am waiting for my Sonnet 800 card to arrive. Maybe I will even be able to re-interleave my RAM when I install it... |

Ryan & mjohnson1, I've uninstalled my Logitech Control Center, which I didn't use anyway. It didn't make a difference. I've deleted (uninstalled?) Netscape, Chrimera and Mozilla. Only IE is left and that's what I'm using to post this msg. So, far, so good. Keep your fingers crossed. I'll report back later. --Dwight |

I was having the same problem until I ran Disk Warrior and discovered I had some overlapped files, (never seen that one before) one of which was the IE cache file. Since DW repaired it I haven't seen it again, though I'm keeping my fingers crossed for now. |

If you are getting a freeze with no error message of any kind, then the most likely culprit is some type of memory problem. It seems that Mac OS X 10.2 is a little pickier about memory than 10.1 was (and 10.1 was pickier than 10.0). It is as if they are optimizing the way that memory is accessed, and some memory can't keep up (though I don't actually know for sure if that is the correct explanation). In any event, it might be worth swapping out some DIMMs to see if you can isolate a problematic one, or perhaps just rearranging them. Also, it might be worth adjusting some L2 cache settings. Perhaps slowing it down a little, or changing from write-thru mode to write-back (or vice-versa). |
