10.2 Installation Issues |

Hi, I have had no problem installing or running 10.1.5 however when I install 10.2 it usually runs once or twice, then on the next bootup, it just sits there doing nothing. Booting into verbose mode, it gets to the point where I get the following messages and just hangs. devfs no/dev Load of /sbin/mach_init,errno86, trying /etc/mach_init Load of /etc/mach_init failed, errno2 Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks, J |

I've traced down the source of my error. It is the Yamaha 2100. When it's plugged into the Sonnet Tempo 66 the boot process terminates in the mach_init errors. When it's not plugged in to the board, no errors, boots fine. Note that the 10.2 Installer runs fine from the Yamaha. I built a 10.2 install on a drive in a G4 tower, installed Sonnet's extensions, updated to 10.2.1, put the drive in the 7500 - error. So I've gone back to 10.1.5 |

From an email via Sonnet Tech Support: Do you know what firmware you have on that Acard IDE card? You should be at v3.21 which is the latest version. You can find it at www.acard.com if you don't have it. This version is not very new - March, 2001 |

duncans4, where did you get 3.21? I am running on a Sonnet ATA66 with 3.12, and that is the latest rom version I can find on the sonnet site. Is this Rom version the result of the " Tango and Tempo Trio Firmware/Patch Software Firmware Patch". If so, it seems to have adverse effects... |

The correct ROM Version for the Tempo ATA66 is 3.21, not 3.12, and yes, that's what I'm using. I've completely reinstalled OS 10.1.5. I guess I'll just stick with that unless someone figures something out. I'm still trading emails with Sonnet tech support. Maybe we'll come up with something. |

Other causes/fixes for failed OS X installs: ¥ Reset the PRAM. ¥ Sometimes a previous installation of OS X on the target drive needs to be trashed, or just certain files or folders (I haven't determined which ones), including invisible items. ¥ Apple says the only hard drive drivers that work on the target drive are Apple's and Hard Disk Speed Tools. If your drive is formatted with FWB HDT, etc., try reformatting it with Apple's Drive Setup or OS X's Disk Utility. |

Your experience sounds similar to what I was getting around this time last year, with OS 10.0.0 through 10.0.4, with a Sonnet Tempo ATA66 card in a 9500 with a Newer Tech G3/250 processor. I had better luck at the time with a 7500. Since things work when you install OS 10.2 onto your internal SCSI drive but not when you install onto your drive connected to your Sonnet card, then I'd say the Sonnet card is the problem. This might seem like stating the obvious, but it looks like you're pursuing other approaches that won't pan out--you should focus on the Sonnet card as the cause. If the Sonnet card's firmware isn't version 3.12, try updating it and then try 10.2 again. Also, some OS X installations work only when the install CD is in an Apple original CDROM drive; some people find they have to connect it internally, other people have to connect it externally. Many people have had trouble getting some versions of OS X to boot from ATA66 PCI cards. The ATA100 and ATA133 cards work much more often. Right now, my 7500 with a Tempo ATA66 is running OS 10.2.1 (don't know why it works when yours doesn't), and my 7300 with a Tempo ATA100 is also running 10.2.1. |

I was just looking back at the original message in this thread, and this line caught my eye: devfs no /dev Are all the people who get mach_init errors seeing this? It sounds as though something may be complaining that the /dev directory does not exist, which would certainly be problematic. |

Did you come up with anything on these mach_init errors? |

Hmm. I'm not sure what to suggest, unfortunately. I'll do some more checking to see exactly where that error message would be generated and see whether that suggests anything. |

Reinstalled using XPF 2.2.2 - Same mach_init errors. Used an invisible file utility under OS 9 to replace the installed mach_init with the mach_init in the sbin directory of the CD - Same errors. Verified CD using OS X Disk Utility - CD Verified. Verified CD using the Disk First Aid program on the CD under OS 9 - Mount Check minor errors. (What does that mean?) The installed mach_init is the same size as the mach_init on the CD: 40.68Kb |

I haven't had time to attempt a reinstall, but I should be able to tonight. This time I've archived the 10.1.5 install via Retrospect on another volume so it should be easier to restore. I'll install, check the size of the mach_init, also check the CD for errors, and try copying the mach_init from the CD while in OS 9. |

this may be old info but, from an earlier post it appears that Sonnet and 10.2 have some issues. maybe it'll help. http://eshop.macsales.com/OSXCenter/XPostFacto/forum/viewThread.cfm?&thread=529&Topic=31&threadID=2814&ct=1#2814 I have reverted to 10.1.5 so that I can use a Tempo Trio ATA card to boot from instead of SCSI (I have an early Power Center Pro that had known internal SCSI issues that I'ld rather avoid). I never could get 10.2 to reliably boot from the PCI ATA card because it "found" ATA 66 slots where there should be none then went into a wait loop. |

At this point, I have 10.2 installed on one of my internal scsi drives (I have two connected) and I have had hardly any problems with it. It boots up everytime. I tried to reinstall 10.2 on my drive connected to my tempo 66 pci card and the same things happens as previously described. Sometimes it makes all the way through both disks and then I get those errors or sometimes I only make it through disk one. I have tried the original install disks and backup disks that I burned to no luck. The internal scsi has performed well until I start trying to playback music. That is where I still have problems. Hmm. Probably not. Can you take a look at /sbin/mach_init from Mac OS 9 and see if it seems to have the appropriate size? One possibility is that this file has become corrupted in some manner. I suppose you could just copy that one file from the 10.2 CD and see whether that makes any difference. Also, running something like Disk First Aid or DiskWarrior might be a sensible step, to see whether any disk problems are found. |

I've installed from this CD onto two other machines: iMac DV+ G4 Tower No problems there. I'm typing on one of them right now. Could the CD still be bad? |

I've seen reports at http://www.macfixit.com recently about problems with some Mac OS X 10.2 Install CDs that can end up with symptoms like this. You might check and see whether that seems to be a possibility. BTW, on my 10.2 installation, there is no /etc/mach_init, but there is a /sbin/mach_init. Here is how it looks in the terminal: -r-xr-xr-x 1 root wheel 40684 Aug 24 20:01 /sbin/mach_init And here is what errno 86 seems to mean: #define EBADARCH 86 /* Bad CPU type in executable */ So I'm guessing that your /sbin/mach_init has gotten corrupted in some way. If it is possible to reinstall with a different CD, that might worth trying. |

I'm having the exact same errors. Often it won't even run after install, just straight to the mach_init errors. I've had my machine apart for a week - trying different setups - it doesn't seem to matter whether or not my Radeon card is plugged in or not, where the RAM cards are, whether or not there is an internal SCSI drive or which PCI slots I use. It also occurs with the Sonnet installer. Installs, then error on first or second reboot.
