In 10.2 my System 9 drive run through an Initio Miles U2W SCSI card no longer is visible. Trying to update the firmware to a System 10 compatible version disallowed booting from the drive altogether until I used the backflash utility to return to the original state. Has anyone been able to update the Initio firmware successfully? My System: PPC 8500/NewerTech G3/300 |

Try Using the Miles_2_Smart_SCSI_X 1.00 version in OSX.2 with the backflash version of the patch (inia100.sim; size 56K created 12/20/2001). I think this version of the firmware installer is the one that came out just before the pseudo-official version for X.2, It was created 11/28/2001 and is 160K. Don't know if Initio still has it on their site. If not I can mail it to whoever wants it. So use it to backflash to 9, then use the Startup Disk System Preference to select your disk with OS9 on it and whalla, OS9 is up and ready to fly. :-) hope this helps Tim |

I also updated firmware and can only operate in OSX, altough Classic (9.1) seems to work OK. Booting on a CD system (Norton Utilities) into OS 9.1 gives me nothing. The card and drive are not visible. I probably will add a spare drive on the other bus for OS 9.1 if I think it is necessary to boot into 9.1. Power Computing Power Tower Pro, XLR8 G3 400, Initio Miles2W, lots of memory. Everything else seems OK, except my AsanteFast ethernet card, to I am temporarily using the built-in ethernet. |

Luscher, no such luck. I've hose one card - I can't bring it up in either OS and will have to probably send it Initio & have them scrafice a chicken to get it to work...Oh, yeah, and $40. Bah! G2, When I read the instructions on their web site, such as they are, I could not believe what I was reading - either OS 9 or X, but not both. Bye, bye Initio. Hello ATTO. Initio is try to make a pig in a poke work...and it shows. I'm very disappointed in them. Too, bad, as they used to be a great alternative to Adaptec. --Dwight |

what a nest of snakes! I also have the Miles2 card, and have gnashed my teeth about Initio's X support for a while now. here's what I'm working with at the moment (which, in addition to my Classic not working, puts me into OS9 for now): to boot into OS9, I use firmware 3.20 or less. the 3.90 firmware (which is 10.2 compatible) won't boot my machine into OS9 (the Miles2 SCSI bus disappears altogether). to boot into OSX 10.1, I use firmware 3.20 or higher. notice that this "magic" firmware (3.20) will boot my machine into both OS9 and OSX 10.1 to boot into OSX 10.2, I use firmware 3.90. how? in OS9 I update the firmware to 3.90 (which will only come into effect after a restart) and then use XPF to restart my machine into 10.2 to boot back to OS9 from OSX 10.2, I must flash the firmware back to 3.20 or lower. how? I restart the computer holding down the OPTION key and insert an emergency ZIP disk that contains a basic OS9 and the backflasher. I start up from the ZIP and flash the Miles2 card back to 3.20 or lower. The next restart will boot my machine into OS9. Severely convoluted? Indeed. Until I get Classic working again, however, I'm in OS9 for now, and when I do get Classic working I forsee very few instances where booting to OS9 will be necessary, so I'm content to live with the cludge for now, or if I get frustrated I'll dump the Miles2 card and get some thing that really is fully compatible from Jag on down. hope that helps. let me know, and good luck!
