Hello fellow OldWorld enthusiasts, I'd like to know what the consensus is about RAMsize and OS X on OldWorld. Is it worth it to go for th gigabyte of memory? Or is 640MB more than enough? Cheers, Lars |

oh, I am using window compression, too, as I've read that it helps with the memory bandwidth issues. stephen |

I recently put 1G of ram in my 8600 with fully populated 128MB sticks. I have all EDO memory, not the super-expensive kind, but the $30 kind (mostly purchased from OWComputing. I have noticed that going from about 600 to 1G made many things a little smoother. My swap in use (not that anything is ever paged out) hovers at about 1.8G. My numbers: Processes: 59 total, 3 running, 56 sleeping... 118 threads 12:05:47 Load Avg: 1.45, 1.51, 1.31 CPU usage: 60.9% user, 39.1% sys, 0.0% idle SharedLibs: num = 99, resident = 24.8M code, 1.73M data, 5.95M LinkEdit MemRegions: num = 2442, resident = 67.4M + 7.52M private, 44.9M shared PhysMem: 56.2M wired, 68.6M active, 178M inactive, 303M used, 721M free VM: 1.87G + 48.6M 4550(0) pageins, 0(0) pageouts Mach Virtual Memory Statistics: (page size of 4096 bytes) Pages free: 184434. Pages active: 17580. Pages inactive: 45717. Pages wired down: 14413. "Translation faults": 3108122. Pages copy-on-write: 38550. Pages zero filled: 590424. Pages reactivated: 0. Pageins: 4551. I am running 256 on a PM 8500/XLR6 500 works fine but I will be adding more later as $$ permits. Since I am a Photographer and will be working with images more is much better but for learning about Jag. what I have is fine. Jim |
