Hi Ryan and the list Apple is smart, they try everything to let us buy new machines. Because of this, we have a ram problem, timing e.t.c If i understand you can do a lot with software. A simple question and maybe a simple solution, can we set back the ram timing so we can use the regular ram and have less problems? Ok, i guess the answer is difficult. Can someone give it a try. It does appear to be true that each new version of Mac OS X is a little pickier about memory than the last. Presumably there is nothing mysterious about this--and given that Darwin is open-source, it ought to be possible to look and see what is changing that would affect this. I am afraid, though, that my understanding of how memory works is actually quite limited--I wouldn't know what to look for! But, in theory, it ought to be possible to get Mac OS X to be less aggressive about memory timings. |

Hi I read a lot about faulty ram's, but how om earth is it posable that 10.2 is more pickier then 10.0 or Rhapsody. I did have never problems with rhapsody on my 7500. So my question what did they change in the software that you need faster ram, i didn't change my processor upgrade? rene |

I'd like to add: even Mac OS 9 suffers with bad memory. The newer (and faster) the OS, the more hangs I got. It got unbearable when I updated my 8600 (Kansas) to 9.2.2 using os9forever tools. Then I decided to check my RAM, but as I wanted interleaved RAM I checked bank by bank, not DIMM by DIMM. Several tries later I had isolated the faulty pair, and no more hangs! |

It seems to me like some sticks of memory will work fine in one box, but not another... This may be related to the CPU upgrade involved or the memory control chips on the MOBO itself. Anyhow, playing memory musical sockets does sometimes provide a fix although it's hardly satisfying. |

I'm having what appears to be problems with memory with respect to my browsers (and only them) freezing the system. Ryan suggested I'll play "Move the Memory (Module) Around" which I' will do over the next couple of evenings. Dunno what we're going to with memory vendors once we find out that we need high performance 60ns memory. Looks like we get out our wallets. --Dwight |
