How to enable BootX and Open Firmware display on the Radeon 7000. Initially, I used XPostFacto to set my Open Firmware output device to ATY,RV100ad_A, listed in the OpenFirmware menu but only AFTER I rebooted back to OS 9 after a succesful boot into 10.2 When I now look at the nvram with the OSX command nvram output-device it now says pci1/ATY,RV100Parent/ATY,RV100ad_A The A at the end denotes the VGA connector, use a B if you use the DVI connector (gleaned from OSX command ioreg, and from OS9 Apple System Profiler. Sadly, OSX System profiler seems a retarded sibling of it's older brother instead of a better educated one. OS 9 even lists DIMM sizes). My Radeon 7000 is in slot C1. I do not know if pci1 refers to that, or to perhaps it being on PCI bus #1. if you don't want to go back to 9 (Stay Pure!): nvram output-device="pci1/ATY,RV100Parent/ATY,RV100ad_A" reboot for glorious Grey Apple! Yeah Baby! Don't forget to set input-device to kbd or you won't be able to type commands if you decide to go to open firmware... Thanks to Ryan for creating XPostFacto, and nick.ashton for his posts on ioreg |

Doh, forgot to mention my machine, originally an 8600/300, aka Kansas, aka PowerSurgePE also found out about the pci1 bus in Developer Tools app IORegistryExplorer in key: Install developer Tools. Open IORegistryExplorer and go to: IODeviceTree:Root:device-tree:aliases@0 it lists pci 1 as an alias for /bandit@F2000000 and also has an entry for pci2. as I remeber, the 9600 shares the design with the 8600, and thhas three more pci slots on a different bus. |
