Hello OSXGuru, Everybody: I want to thank all of you for the advice with regard to how I might be able to print form an AppleTalk printer under OS X. I am now able to do so with the help of an Ethernet Hub, however, I cannot use my DSL connection while I am printing as PPPoPE and Appletalk seem to be incompatible with each other. And now that I have just insatlled 10.2, I have encountered another difficulty, minor it might seem, since 10.2 is booting up and running even without my having to go through XPostFacto 2.2, yet vexing. 10.2 is installed on a PowerMac 9500, with the PwerLogix G4 card, and it boots all right. However, I am unable to use the Dock, and everything else within it. Sometimes programs like AOL and the web browsers I have won't run or they just unexpectedly quit. However, I did notice this string during a verbose boot (this seems to be the mode the computer prefers to boot in since the 10.2 upgrade): "Set Dependency list for kmod(): Dependency.com.apple kernel of otherworld.support.pached SCSIDevice Type05 is not Compatible or is unavailable" Please tell me what this means, and what I can do to regain control of my Dock. Thanks. Enrico. |

I'm trying to remember if I had to do anything to get printing to work again after installing 10.2. You might try going through the "Add a printer" routine to see if it sees the printer at all etc. Perhaps there are some printer preferences you could delete in order to start over again? I'm not sure where they would be, though. Mac OS X 10.2 does introduce the "CUPS" printing system, but I would have thought that Ethernet PostScript printers would just keep working. On the memory thing, I'm actually not sure what the difference is. All I can say is that the $27 version is working pretty well in my 7300 with a G4 upgrade card. And they're cheaper ... |

Thank you , OSXGuru: I did manage to get the LaserWriter 12/640PS to print from under 10.1.5, but it has gone silent since the 10.2 upgrade. any ideas as to why? Strangely enough, the Dock started working again just as strangely as it disappeared after the 10.2 upgrade. One question that I have with regard to memory. What is the difference between the $27.00 128MB Dimms and the other $179.00 128MB Dimms that OWC sells? Since it is becoming increasngly apparent to me that I will need to increase the memory on my 9500, would I be better off with the $27.00 memory modules or the more expensive ones? Again, thanks for your help ED. |

On the PPOE vs. Appletalk thing, I believe that there is a workaround available. Go to the Network preferences panel, and choose "Network Port Configuration" in the popup menu. Select your Ethernet interface and click on "Duplicate..." Give it a new name that makes sense to you. Now, turn on PPOE in the original, and turn on AppleTalk in the duplicate (or vice versa). If I remember correctly, that should work. The "Set Dependency list for kmod(): Dependency.com.apple kernel of otherworld.support.pached SCSIDevice Type05 is not Compatible or is unavailable" is normal. Basically, it measn that the PatchedSCSIDeviceType05 kernel extensions is not compatible with Mac OS X 10.2. It only works in Mac OS X 10.1 (and it is not needed in 10.2). As for the dock, I'm not sure why it isn't working. What exactly happens when you try to use the Dock? Programs unexpectedly quitting is sometimes a result of memory problems. Mac OS X 10.2 is a little pickier about memory in 10.1--there have been cases where memory that works fine in 10.1 is problematic in 10.2. |
