Screen goes black during Install, no joy |

This is on a client's Beige G3 with Sonnet G4 Upgrade card. Right about now, I'd kill for a kernel panic... Using XPF, the machine boots from the Jag install cd, and the process proceeds as expected. About 3/4 of the way through the install, the monitor goes black (power light flashes as though sleeping). At first I thought it might be a sleep issue, so I tried moving the mouse throughout the install and even turned off sleep (while still in 9). Same problem. Next, I figured maybe the install was still proceeding behind the scenes, so to speak. I waited until all hard disk activity stopped, then gave it the 3 finger salute. It still wouldn't from the OS X partition. Is Jag boring the system into Sleep O' Death? :) |

You definitely live up to your handle. ;) It seems this is a pretty well-known issue. The short answer is that it is possible to avoid the blank screen issue. The long answer is, visit the following URLs for about every conceivable way of solving the problem. Beige G3 Thread on MacFixit: http://www.macfixitforums.com/php/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Forum35&Number=402019&Forum=CatSearch-3&Words=Beige%20G3%20blank%20screen&Match=And&Searchpage=0&Limit=100&Old=allposts&Main=402019&Search=true (You may need to cut and paste the whole massive URL) That thread leads to this thread on Apple's Discussion Lists: http://discussions.info.apple.com/WebX?50@142.6pCkai8Rc06.6@.3bb95478 Thanks for the help, Ryan. Best damn $10 bucks I've ever spent. Expect my client's registration if all goes well this weekend. |

Unfortunately, I don't think that Mac OS X writes a log file anywhere during installs from the CD. However, there is a "Show Log" command in the Installer app. You might try watching that as the install proceeds to see if there are any clues, presumably just before the monitor goes dark. Of course, with the monitor going dark, it may be hard to see the clues ... I have seen a discussion of exactly this problem with the Beige G3s somewhere, but I'm afraid that I can't remember where! It might have been on www.macfixit.com--at least, that seems the most likely candidate among the sites I visit regularly. Unfortunately, I can't remember whether there was a solution or a workaround. |

Could this be an invisible KP? |

Still stumped by this one. I'm wondering if the screen is going black because of an unsupported resolution during a kernel panic. An unsupported kernel panic, perhaps? :) If so, would there be a log file I could look at to verify whether a KP occurred? TIA, -Tim |
