Umax S900 w/Newer 400MHZ G3 --- Crashing |

I ran xpostfacto and installed 10.2 on my S900 without any problem. Machine kept freezing (screen/cursor frozen) - so I de-interleaved my memory. No more freezes - but after running for 30 minutes or so i now get a kernel panic with the new "You must restart message" I then run in 9 and Norton finds a major error which I fix and start over. Any ideas? Thanks, Bob O'H |

1. Re-interleaved the memory 2. Removed all PCI cards except Rage video and USB cards. 3. Switched the internal SCSI chain to the slower bus 4. Upgraded to 10.2.1 No problems - this machine is running perfectly. Thanks, Bob |

I have a S900 / sonnet G4 450 / 544mb ram interleaved / ATI Nexus128 / SIIG 133ata / IBM 75gig /Seagate 4gig scsi / 2gig IBM / Yamaha 8824 scsi internal. I have macos 9.1 loaded on my 4gig seagat cheetah and OSX 10.2.1 on the 75gig IBM connected to the SIIG card. Everything plays nice except when I add my Adaptec Firewire/USB2 combo card. I can not get OSX 10.2.1 to boot with this card instaled how ever I did get it to boot in to macos9.1 by moving the cards around. All devices show up and mount fine as long as I don't add the SIIG and FW/USB2 cards together. I would like to know if anyone has had this same problem and possibly might have any solutions that I could try. My only other thought is that it is a driver issue that Apple will have to address. |

Probably the best thing to do would be to get the actual panic text, rather than the new "You must restart" message. The way to do that is to enable the "Show panic text" menu item in the "Debug" menu of XPostFacto (that menu item appeared in version 2.2.1 or 2.2.2 of XPostFacto--I forget which). This won't prevent the kernel panic, but at least it should give you a useful error message. You will need to copy it down, or take a picture with a digital camera if you have one, and then post the results. |

I don't know anything about the Newer G3 Upgrade, but the Newer G4 400 MHz card that I was using until a few months ago had all sorts of crashing problems until I found out that the speculative processing feature had to be disabled. After I did that, the card was very stable and worked well in my 9500. I was able to install OS X 10.1.5 and have it run OK, but I added the Crescendo 800 MHz CPU to my 9500, and now I can't install any version of OS X. If the G3 card has speculative processing, which I don't know, then you might get it to work by disabling it. I think it's really counter-productive to de-interleave RAM. I agree that the dual 867's look very attractive, but it would cost me about $12,000 to replace my legacy hardware (two professional scanners and a wide format printer) that the new G4's won't support, and I'm not about to do that until something expensive breaks beyound repair. |

I won't retry setting up this Umax machine until the weekend - but I may have found some helpful info at: http://www.lowendmac.com/supermacs/xinstall.html I will move the video card to PCI Slot 1 and reconnect the internal SCSI devices to the slow SCSI bus (as the referenced link states the high-speed bus just will not work in Mac OS X - although I am not certain this is still the case) Any comments from the OSXGURU would be appreciated - Bob |

I have a powertowerpro running a sonnet G4/800 that is doing the same thing. I have juggled my memories, and PCI cards all to no avail. The same machine boots and runs in 9.1, and will run memories test forever and be happy (seemingly). This same system ran 10.15 perfectly with a g3/450 in it. I will try the g3 tomorrow and see if 10.2 works with that. |

I had to down clock my Powerlogix 450 G4 to 420 (52.5 bus) to get it to run reliably under 10.2.... I don't know? Those dual 867's for 1699$ look good these days. Marty |
