I've the following setup: Umax S900, 512 MB RAM interleaved Sonnet G4 800 VST ATA 66, ATI Radeon 7000, DEC210419 based Ethernet, No-name FW MacOS X 10.1.5 Server, XPostFacto 2.2.2 The problem: The ATI Radeon will be only recognized in OS X and if it is in one of the two top slots. It won't be recognized in OS 9 (latest ATI drivers) in any slot. Questions: - has anybody here got the Radeon working in the lower slots within the Umax? OS 9 doesn't matter because it could run headless if Apple Remote Desktop is installed. - does anybody know a way to run OS X (Aqua) headless? Any Kext out here which makes a display? - could any Umax S900 owner give me hint which 100 MBit Ethernet card might work flawlessly within the lower slots? The Asante 690, Realtek 8139 based don't even work correctly in the top ones (problems with AFP - see other threads here...) - or it would be fine if somebody could tell me which Display card would work in X in the Umax lower slots. Thanks! BTW: the Sonnet G4 800 in combination with the Radeon 7000 really rocks. Its unbelievable how fast these old machines could be... |

. wow, well do you know of any wireless networking card that will work in that other slots? none of my cards work in the other 2 slots. (ATI Radeon Mac Edition and a belkin Firewire USB card) I am getting a wireless network here and i would much rather have a PCI card and a USB networking card. I know nothing of wireless networking sorry. I see why you thought the other PCi slots don't work since your "lucky " enought to own two cards that need slot 1 &2. I am using a cheap USB card in slot 3 and an Asante ethernet card in slot 4 of my J700 both work fine. I'm guessing a wireless card might work. Be sure to buy form a store that will take it back if it doesn't work. Twin turbo video cards and older 8mb and smaller ATI video cards work work fine to name a few other cards. Oh ya firewire cards that aren't combo cards also work fine. Best of luck. If your not on the lowend mac Supermac list you should join ! |

Where on earth did you get the idea that that 2 of the PCI slots of your J700 don't work in OSX!?? That is flatly wrong info! If they don't then they wouldn't work in OS 9 either! It is true that due to the way they are setup some cards either don't work or don't work as well as in the A1 & B2 slots. However ethernet, some video cards some ATA PCI cards and many others, work fine. The ATI 7000 is one card that needs to be in the slot 1 or 2. Asante makes great ethernet cards and I don't understand why you are having problems with yours. Have you checked to see if they have a new driver for your card at their website? My Asante 590 card works great in any Mac OS and in any PCI slot. This is also true for a cheap SMC ethernet card. Video cards that I know will work in a lower slot with OSX. Older ATI Rage pro cards usually 4 or 8 mb cards. Work great in any slot and the 4mb card can be upgraded to 8mb. The Apple version Twin Turbo card which is often available cheap these days. The older ATI cards are harder to find. Best of luck. |

I have A J700 but i think that they are mostly the same (yours should have 2 CPU slots and 6 PCI slots) but what i found with my umax is that 2 of them work on an apple buss but the other 2 work on a 3rd party chip thingy (i guess they report to it) and it is not supported yet with Xpostfacto. It sould work in 9 Jim |
